“I’m not going to hurt your sister! I just want to take care of her. I love her.”

Everest hisses like a scalded cat and shoves me, hard. “I don’t want to hear that, man. I don’t want you anywhere near my sister.”

“Too bad. She’s my friend and I intend to be around her every damn second I can. I want to be the one for her.”

“You don’t think she really wants you, do you?” He laughs it off and I grin.

“Actually I do.” And I know I want her. So this might be the shortest and yet, most difficult relationship ever.

I see Chastity picking up on something going on and looking back at us.

“Don’t fuck around, mate. If you hurt my baby sister, the outlook is going to look very grim for you.”

“Dammit, how do I get it through your thick head. I am all in. I want to marry your sister.”

He jumps back a step. “You’re fucking kidding me.”

“I’m not. That’s why I needed this ruse. I can’t get her to look at me as anything more. I need to make her jealous and make her hot at the same time.” Everest’s face curls into a disgusted grimace.

“God, just shut up. I don’t want to think about any of that right now.”

He stalks to the door and then points back at me one last time. “Fuck this up and you won’t need to worry about being traded. No other team will want you because I will trounce you. Soundly.”

“Check. I’ll see you later at practice.”

“I’ll be waiting out in the car for my sister. Don’t touch her,” he growls.

I roll my eyes at him. “Don’t be a dick. I’m not going to jump her. I love her.”

“Right. Just don’t. And you better not be lying. If you fuck her over, I’ll kill you.”

“You’re insane.” I groan. I know he is. I’ve seen it on the ice. Hell, last week, he got pissed at the guy across from him in the face-off and he almost took a stick to his head. During the face-off. Right in front of a ref.

He has no filter. I’m not sure why that makes him a great captain but he’s also the first man there and the last man to leave. He works harder than all of us put together. And he just plain loves the team.

“Hey!” I holler out the door. “Aren’t you going to have to go up on the auction block?”

“Yeah,” he grumbles. “And I planned to ask my sister to help me out. Now there’s another reason for me to be pissed at you, asshole.”

I throw my head back and laugh. “Don’t any of the other guys have a sister you can ask?”

“I don’t have a death wish,” he mutters.

“What about the new team therapist?”

“I will figure my own shit out. You have enough stuff to worry about. I can tell you now, I don’t think she has a clue and you’re gonna have your work cut out for you convincing her that you’re serious.”

“I know. I don’t know quite what to do.”

“You’ll figure it out. Good luck. Because if you fuck up, I’m coming for you.”

I shake my head and shut the door, almost running right into Chastity behind me.

“Oh shit!” I grab her arm and try to keep one or both of us from hitting the floor.

“I’m sorry, baby. I’ll pay better attention next time.”

“Sure.” She eyes me closely. “Are you alright? Everest didn’t say anything bad, did he? Cause I’ll talk to him. He’s got to learn that I’m not a baby and he can’t keep telling me what to do. I’m an adult and I make my own choices.”
