Chastity

Fidgeting, I pace back and forth under the exit to the parking lot. I can’t be still. Something’s going on and I wish I knew why it felt like things were changing in big ways.

Steele hasn’t changed. He’s still the same big, endearing teddy bear who beats the shit out of the other team on the ice but yet is so gentle with me.

He’s a study in contradictions but to me he’s just Steele. My best friend and the guy who protects me and takes care of me at all costs.

But there’s something different about our interactions now and I can’t quite place my finger on it. When I touch him or he touches me, it feels like I can’t breathe. An electric shock zings through my body and I feel like I’m addicted to the feeling.

My brother stalks up to me. “What the hell is going on with you and Steele?”

“You know we’re friends, Everest. I don’t know why you’re getting all bent out of shape all of a sudden.”

“I see the way he looks at you and I swear it looks like you’re looking at him different too. If he touches you, I’ll break his fucking hands. I’ve already told all the guys that they’re not allowed to touch you.”

I roll my eyes at my bossy older brother. “You’re ridiculous. I can’t believe you did that. Most of those guys in there are nicer than the ones I’ve actually been going out with.”

His big hand points at me. “That is not my concern. I can kick those guys’ asses. But these are my teammates. I don’t want to have to kill them for touching my baby sister.”

Huffing out a sharp breath, I groan. “I am not a baby, Everest. I’m an adult. I’m twenty-five years old. What are you going to do? Threaten every guy out there until you think I’m too old to date?”

He lifts a blond brow? “What’s wrong with that?”

“Other than me being alone and miserable? Nothing at all.”

His face tightens. “I don’t know how to fix this for you, sis. All I know is that I can’t have one of my guys doing it with my sister. The bro code is very specific on this. I’d have to kill them.”

“Honestly. I think that men are fucking weird,” I growl, stalking off to where I see Steele coming out of the tunnel from the locker room.

“Hey! Girls are no piece of cake!” He hollers at me.

Steele grins at me, his grey eyes sparkling with laughter. “You and your brother having a chat?”

“Yeah. We both agree he’s an ass.”

He snorts and then lifts my hand up to caress my knuckle with his lips. My breath halts in my chest. Then my heartbeat races out of control like a runaway train.

“Wha-what are you doing?” I ask breathlessly.

He winks at me then his eyes slew to the side where my brother’s watching us. “Fucking with Everest.”

He waves our joined hands at him and laughs out loud when Everest shoots him a deadly glare and stalks out of the arena.

“Seriously? He’s too easy to mess with lately. I don’t even have to try.”

I chuckle but it’s forced because my body is aching for his touch. And I just don’t understand it.

“Can we go see that New Romantic comedy? I’m dying to see it. It looks hilarious and I need a good laugh.”

Steele stops and pulls me to a halt. “What’s wrong, firefly?”

My heart jumps when he calls me that. “I wish you’d stop with the nickname,” I grouse, dropping my head so that my hair falls in front of my face, hiding the cheesy grin that I wish would go away.

“Not gonna happen. Now what’s wrong.”

I sigh and turn away, hiding from his unnerving stare. His ice-cold eyes can make you tell him everything you don’t want to. He should be a police interrogator.

“It’s nothing. Let’s just go watch the movie. I really need this,” I whine, hating the needy edge to my voice.
