My mouth drops open. I haven’t heard a thing about this! He’s in love?
It feels like a punch to the gut and I push that thought down, smiling in what I know must be practically a grimace.
“Th-that’s wonderful. I’m so happy for you.”
Why am I not happy for him? Why is he giving me a really strange look? Like he’s trying to see inside my soul.
I attempt another smile but I know it’s still scary-looking.
“Right.” He sighs and runs his long fingers through his hair. “Anyway, I need a plan. Some way to not actually have to date this person.”
“Why don’t you just tell them that you love someone and take her with you?”
“I can’t do that. I don’t think she’s ready for it.”
“She’s not ready for it? Why?”
“She doesn’t know that I have feelings for her.”
Shock ripples through my body and I stare at him. “Why don’t you just tell her? I’m sure she’ll be excited and happy! She’s going to love you too!”
Who wouldn’t?
He shakes his head. “I can’t do that to her. Put her into the spotlight when it’s all so new.”
“What is this favor?” I ask, breathless and apprehensive.
“I want you to go as my date. Bid on me and buy me.”
“B-but,” I don’t know what to say. “What about her? Isn’t she going to be upset?”
“No. I guarantee she won’t. She has no idea I have these feelings.” Once again, it feels like his silver eyes are telling me something. Searching to find something in my own eyes.
“Steele?” I moan. “This is a big ask!”
“I know. But I figured we’re such good friends…”
“Friends.” I scrunch my eyes closed, pain streaking through me. “Yes, yes we are.”
Then I open my eyes. “I’ll do it. But we have to explain it to my brother so he doesn’t lose his mind.”
He nods and smiles at me. I still feel like there’s something hidden there. Something I’m missing.
“Absolutely. You know I don’t want to piss Everest off.”
“Yeah. Nobody wants that.”
“Now…you want a drink or you just want me to take you home?”
Fiddling with my fingers, I sigh. “I could use a drink.”
“Great. Hang on a second. I’ll be right back. I really appreciate it.”
“No problem.” But it feels like it might end up being a problem. A big damn problem and I’m just not sure why.
