“What the hell are you doing here?” I hear Steele’s voice in the other room.

“You know why I’m here. She never went home. Where the hell is she?” Everest’s angry voice rings loud in the house.

“Ugh!” I groan, trying to hide my head under the covers. It feels like my head is splitting open and the jackasses yelling in the other room aren’t helping things.

“I know she left the hockey arena with you. I know you were doing something last night and I know she didn’t go home! Once again, I’m asking! Where the hell is my baby sister?”

I stand up, wobbling on shaky legs. It feels like the room tilts to the left and I have to grab the bed to keep upright. I look around but I have no idea which room I’m in. Steele has plenty of guest rooms so I guess this must be one of them.

I grab my head, groaning, and then stumble out of the room and down the hall.

“Do you think that you could tone it down a bit, Everest? I’ve got a fucking headache!”

I hear a hissed-out breath and then a whoosh of breath from Steele and a thud. My eyes open just in time to watch Steele double over, Everest standing over top of him, shaking out his fist.

“Have you lost your mind?” I scream, whimpering inside when my head erupts in pain.

I stalk over and slap Everest across the head. “What the hell did you do that for?”

“He took advantage of you! My baby sister! That is directly against the bro code. By rights, I should get to kill him!”

Steele lifts himself up and his icy glare makes me jump between the two of them.

“Knock it off, Everest! It’s none of your business who or what I do. I can’t believe you assaulted a team mate! Don’t you think that’s a little rash. And stupid!” I growl and stomp away, pushing my long hair behind my ear.

“I don’t give a flying fuck! We talked. He knows how I feel about one of the guys touching my baby sister. I’m. Not. Happy!”

To tell the truth neither am I! But for now, I’ll make a concerted effort not to kill either one of the stubborn men.

“What I do is not your business. You don’t get to tell me what to do. I’m well into my 20’s, Everest Laroux! Old enough to know my own mind and pay my own way. I don’t need you coming around all the time and trying to control me. If I want to fuck someone…even one of your buddies, it’s nobody’s business but mine.”

Steele’s head pops up and I stifle the urge to tell him to stay down.

Everest paces over to me and his big hand catches my hand and starts tugging me to the door.

“Stop it! Dammit, Everest, you’re acting like you’re the holy grail of virtues! I know damn well what you’ve gotten up to over the years. And don’t you dare tell me it’s different for a guy. Especially since I know half your excuses are total bullshit. I should have the same rights as any other person. Man or woman!”

Steele claps and Everest whips around, growling.

“That is enough!” I scream and thrust myself between the two men. Neither is willing to give me a second glance as they glare at each other and growl like animals.

“What is wrong with you guys?” I shriek, the shrill sound going straight through my head.

Everest spares me a glance. “He took advantage of you. I knew he was into you. I knew he wanted you. And now…I guess I was right.” He glares at Steele out of fierce brown eyes. If looks could kill, Steele would be lying on the floor twitching in the last throes of death.

My mouth falls open. “I didn’t have sex with Steele. He was a perfect gentleman. It was late and we were talking and I guess I fell asleep.” Maybe it was the two mixed drinks too. Steele mixes some hellacious stuff that hits harder than a mule kick.

Everest scoffs, still eying my friend like he’s measuring him for a casket. “I don’t buy that. I know what’s going on here.”

“We’re friends and that’s all we are,” I insist, feeling a bitter little shiver inside my soul. Not even if I want more.Wait! Where the hell did that thought come from?

“He wants more.” My big brother glares at him and grits out those three little words between his teeth.

“Ugh! We were just talking. And he asked me for a favor. That’s it.”

His head whips towards me and his dark eyes narrow. “What favor?”

Now is not the time for this home truth but I guess it’s now or never. “He asked me to be his date for the charity thing and he wants me to buy him.”
