He looks up at me and his grey eyes are guarded, wary.

“Hey, are you done?”

“Yeah, I’ve checked all your wires and I got all the problems. My friend got the squirrel and got it returned back to the woods.”

I lean over the table and drop the bag I’m carrying to the floor. “Oh, thank god! I was so worried it was going to get hurt.”

His full lips quirk up and he groans. “Princess, you are a little whacky.”

I nod my head. “I’ll take that one.”

He chuckles and crosses his brawny arms over his broad chest. My mouth goes dry when I see the veins and muscles flexing in his forearms where his flannel shirt is pushed up to his elbows.

“So what are you doing now, princess?”

“I’m going to stay here and get things ready for tomorrow. I moved my class to Sunday morning, which isn’t ideal, but I have enough people who are willing to come to make it work.”

His lips thin out and he glares out the window. “It’s dark out, princess. You should be on your way home.”

I laugh and sit down at one of my tables. “I’m here late all the time.”

“I bet you don’t even lock your door.”

“Of course I do,” I huff. “I’m not an idiot.”

“Good to know.”

“What are you going to do now? It’s been a long day. Are you hungry? I got enough for two.”

I start to pull a couple of hot subs out of the bag and then a large container of crunchy, golden French fries.

His eyes darken on the food and I see him lick his lips. I smirk. “I can tell you’re hungry, Harrison. Why don’t you sit down and have something to eat?” I nod at the seat across from me.

He sits himself down and I hear the chair groan. “I need better chairs apparently. I hope you don’t break my furniture!”

He grimaces and moves on the chair. “It’s not exactly the most comfortable chair I’ve ever sat in.”

I push a large sandwich and fries at him and he grunts, quickly shoveling a few fries in his mouth. “I think you can handle it until you manage to eat some food.”

He nods his head and opens the package. “Thanks for this.” He shoots me a quizzical look. “I’m not sure why you got extra food but I appreciate it. I was just gonna go home and have a cold sandwich anyway.”

“How’s your sister?”

His full lips thin again. “She’s fine. Still pouting over the boy.”

“You should let the boy thing go.”

He glares at me while he chews and after he swallows, he says, “I can’t do that. That boy just wants one thing. She needs to worry about her schooling. Not the little crush she’s got on him.”

“If you tell a girl that she can’t have something, she’ll just try harder.”

“Yeah. Well, I don’t really care about that. All I care about is her safety and her future. Not her heart.”

“That’s sad.”

“Listen, she’s still processing our parents death. I get that. But that doesn’t mean as her guardian I can just let things like this go.”

He glances down at his watch. “I actually need to get home pretty soon and get her something to eat.”
