Haddie

I step out of the shower, wrap my hair in a towel, and throw on my robe. I grab my lotion and rub it in. In the bathroom I take the towel off my head and comb out my hair and then quickly braid the wet curls.

There’s a knock on my door. I head through the apartment and look out the peephole. I close my eyes and debate on answering the door.

“Please open the door, Haddie,” Chris says from the other side of the door.

I take a deep breath, plaster a fake smile on my face. “Hey, what are you doing here?” I am so proud of my performance.

He looks down at my body and I realize I’m in my robe—did I forget to mention that it’s really short and I’m naked underneath it? He grabs my hand and steps through my door, shutting it behind him. “Go put some clothes on, babe. I’ll wait out here.”

I just stand in front of him like an idiot. He smiles and then chuckles, and that unfreezes me. I narrow my eyes at him and then hustle back into my bedroom. After throwing on a tank top and knit shorts, I slowly make my way back into the living room where Chris is standing where I left him.

“Who was the guy you were with at the diner?” His question surprises me.

I cross my arms. “Who was the redhead?”

“That was Cherie. She was my boss when I was working in realty. I wanted to prove to your dad and everyone else that I’m an asset. I figured if I met with her and worked out a deal to buy houses and then selling them once they’re flipped, that it would be another way I could contribute.”

I shake my head. “You don’t have to explain yourself to me,” I say quietly, looking at the floor.

He moves right in front of me. Chris lifts my face to look into my eyes. “Who was the guy?”

“He’s just my friend, Graham. He is not interested in me at all, and I’m definitely not interested in him.”

Chris nods and then looks around. “Where’s Madison?”

“She’s at Mom and Dad’s. We were going to spend the night there.” I shrug. “I just didn’t want to be alone tonight.”

He cups my face in his hand and I nervously lick my lips. My heart pounds in my chest. “Tell me not to kiss you,” Chris whispers.

“No,” I whisper back.

“You deserve someone better than me.” His voice is rough, and he looks so vulnerable right now.

I cover his lips with my finger. “I deserve who I want. Why can’t you see what a good person you a—”

Before I can even finish speaking, he slams his lips down on mine. I wrap my arms around his waist. He uses his lips to open my mouth. Chris swallows my moan the moment his tongue brushes mine.

He wraps my braid around his hand, pulling my head back. I gasp against his lips and grip onto him tighter. He pulls back and his breath leaves him in rapid pants. Chris steps back from me and my heart sinks.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“What are you talking about? I wanted you to do it, I’ve wanted you to do it for a long time.” I step toward him. “I like you, Chris. Not just because you’re Madison’s father, but because you’re a wonderful dad, a wonderful son. I like you because you’re sweet to me, I like talking to you because you really listen to what I have to say.”

“You take my breath away,” he whispers. “Even in your scrubs after working all day, you’re gorgeous. The way you look at our daughter makes me envious because I want you to look at me like that too.” A tear slides down my cheek and he continues speaking. “You’ve had my back since I’ve been home. You let me know our daughter with no questions asked.”

“There was never any question. I never would’ve kept her from you.” I take a step toward him as butterflies take flight in my belly. “I like you, Chris.” I reach out with both hands and grab his face.

“You already said that,” he says right before I move in and kiss his lips. Chris lets me control the kiss for about two seconds before we’re moving and my back hits the wall.

He grabs me by my thighs, lifting me off the ground until my legs are wrapped around his waist. I’m so nervous. I haven’t had sex with anyone but him, and it was only the one time.

I can feel he’s hard and my body does a shiver. He pulls away from my lips and begins kissing down my cheek, and then dragging his tongue to where my neck meets my shoulder. He nips at the tender skin, making me moan. “Tell me to stop,” Chris whispers against my ear.

“I can’t,” I whimper.

Chris carries me through my apartment, into my bedroom. My nerves kick in the moment my back hit the mattress. He closes his eyes and then lays his head on my chest. “I don’t have any condoms,” he says quietly.
