“What the fuck do you mean,it’s Hastings?” Alec asks before I get the chance.

“Dent started to get irritated because he was taking a lot of time off. He decided to look into where he was going, and he found out he rented a place here. He followed him and found dozens of pictures of Anya all over his fucking walls. Real stalker-like shit.”

“Where the fuck is Dent now?” I ask, trying as hard as I fucking can to stay calm.

“On his way here now. He doesn’t know where Hastings is. He tried tracing his phone, but he has it shut off. The last place it was turned on was the courthouse.”Fuck.

“With their help, I know we’ll find them.” I have no doubt that he’s right. My only fear now is if we’ll find her in time.We fucking better.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Anya

I’m going to puke.I can feel the bile rising in my throat. Why am I so nauseous? My head is throbbing. It feels like someone is hitting it repeatedly with a hammer and my entire body is stiff and hurts.

Was I hit by a truck?

It takes a herculean amount of effort to pull my eyelids open, but when I do, I only grow even more confused. I don’t know where I am. I don’t recognize anything, and I can’t make out what’s going on. I use every ounce of strength I have to try and move my arms, but they don’t budge. I roll my head, trying to look to the side, but I don’t have control of my body. I just want to see exactly where I am, but I can’t. There’s faded brown carpet beneath my feet, and I think the walls are tan, but I can’t look directly at them.

What the hell is going on?

“Oh good, you’re awake.” I force my eyes to focus, but it takes longer than normal for the blurriness in my vision to even out. The man standing in front of me looks familiar, but I can’t pinpoint why. I know I’ve seen him before, spoken to him even, but my mind is still a jumbled mess and all my memories are swimming together.

“I- I know you.” A bright smile lights up his face, which only confuses me even more.

“You remember me.” My mind is a blur of confusion as I try to figure out what’s going on. I pull at my arms again, but they still don’t move. I try to lift my head again, luckily this time I’m able to control it a little bit more. I glance down at my body and realize why I’m so stuck.

“Why- Why am I tied up?” A look of remorse falls over his face, but he doesn’t move to untie me.

“I didn’t want you to get away from me again.” I open my mouth to speak, but I can’t form the words. I don’t know what to say. He kneels down in front of me so I can get a better look at his face, the familiarity hitting me even harder. His light hair and haunting green eyes. My eyes trail over him, searching all of my memories. “I needed the chance to talk to you, to show you how perfect we are for each other.”

“But, I-”

“I was going to woo you, to date you, and give you time to fall for me. But that fucking asshole got in my way.” I close my eyes, trying to process everything he just said.

“Hu- Hunter-” He shakes his head, a venomous look on his face.

“He doesn’t deserve you.” In an instant everything floods back to me. This guy works for Dent. He’s been to Alec’s house, he’s helped his team.

“You work for Dent.” His eyes turn dark as he leans closer to me.

“I don’t work for anyone. Not anymore.” I try to recall if he’s ever looked like this before. Pure evil. We’ve only interacted a few times, and I don’t even recall ever having an actual conversation. He was always just… around.

“Hastings, right?” Another smile overcomes his face and he lifts his hand to caress my cheek. My body wants to revolt, and another wave of nausea hits me at his touch.

“Don’t you get it, Anya?” His tone is gentle and the look he gives me is warm. “We’re perfect for each other. Hunter doesn’t understand you like I do. You belong with me.”

I shake my head, barely comprehending what’s going on. “No. I- I belong with Hunter.” Instantly, his face hardens and any bit of softness I just saw a moment ago is completely gone now. He pulls his hand away and I can see the way his entire mannerism changes.

“You don’t want to be with me?”

“I don’t even know you.” He stands abruptly, shaking his head in disappointment.

“But I know you! I know everything about you!” I want to try to really talk to him, to rationalize how that’s not true. But my mind isn’t working right. I can’t think clearly enough.

“I- I’m sorry. I don’t-” He shakes his head, cutting off my slurred words.

“Well then, I guess you’ve made your choice.” He starts to turn away, and for a moment I begin to let out a breath of relief. But before I can fully relax, he picks up a large piece of wood and spins back toward me. Then everything disappears.
