Istill felt off forthe rest of the day and even at the spa with the girls, surrounded by everything relaxing, I found myself unable to stop thinking about the picture or Teo’s strange behavior.

Another thought teased the edges of my mind. Who sent the picture and why?

It was a question I was afraid would go unanswered, but another part was afraid that I’d find out the hard way. With our spa day complete and everything for the wedding in place, all I had to do was to get ready for dinner that night. After changing into a cream and gold cocktail dress, I touched up my lipstick, and headed for the door.

Everyone was getting ready in their own rooms, and we planned to meet at the venue, so I was startled when I opened my door to see Teo standing in the hall.

“Shit. Teo, you scared me to death.”

“I’m sorry. I thought we could drive together to the gorge for rehearsal.”

“Sure. That would be nice.”

I locked my door and let Teo lead me to his car. He helped me into the car before heading around to his side.

Another car pulled into the parking spot beside us, coming to a rough stop. Before Teo opened his door to get in, a woman jumped out of the car and rushed around to him. I watched the whole scene play out like one of those silent movies as she began motioning with her hands and Teo did the same.

Finally, I couldn’t take it any longer. I climbed out and rounded the car to stand by Teo’s side.

“Teo, what’s going on?”

“Nothing. Just get back in the car.”

“Are you his fiancée?” She asked with an edge to her voice.

I crossed my arms and cocked my head to one side. “Yes. And who are you?”

“I’m the mother of his unborn child.” She placed a hand on her stomach and that’s when I noticed the small, rounded bump that was mostly hidden by her flowy blouse.

“Mother—?” The word caught in my throat. My brain couldn’t even process what she was saying.

“Yes. Teo and I are going to have a baby together, but he doesn’t even want to claim his own child because he’s afraid of what you would think. What kind of woman would keep a child from his or her own father?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

The woman looked back at Teo in surprise. “You haven’t even told her about our child?” She looked offended and placed her hand over her baby bump protectively.

“There’s nothing to tell. That is not my child.”

“I wasn’t with anyone but you. I was completely loyal. So then tell me, Teo. How did I get pregnant? Immaculate conception?”

“Don’t be facetious. If you were willing to hook up with me in the back of some club, who knows how many guys you slept with around the same time?”

I whirled around to face Teo in surprise. “Wait, so you did sleep with her?”

“Maybe. I’m not sure.”

I slowed my words, enunciating each syllable, careful to make sure that there was no misunderstanding. “You’re not sure if you slept with her?”

“No. I don’t really remember much from that night, but we can talk about this later.”
