I held my breath, waiting for impact. I squeezed Teo’s hand so tight that my knuckles turned, but I couldn’t bring myself to let go. Seconds ticked by excruciatingly slow as we waited for the moment when we would bounce across the runway like a skipping stone across a still pond.

The plane jolted with an awful sound of scraping and screeching metal, coming and going in rhythm with each lowering bounce.

We were thrown around like rag dolls and I was grateful for the safety belt holding me to the chair until we finally jerked to a stop with one last long screech.

I panted, roughly sucking in the needed air.

"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" Teo unbuckled his seat belt and started searching my body for any sign of injury.

"I'm fine. I'm good. I just...I'm going to be sick."

I ran to the bathroom at the back of the plane, its door haphazardly hanging open. I didn't even get to secure it as I practically dove toward the toilet before throwing up.

Teo was right behind me, and he rushed into the bathroom just in time to catch me vomiting into the toilet for the second time.

"Mia? What's wrong? Are you okay?”

“I'm fine,” I said through the heaving.

“You're not fine. What's wrong? Did something happen?”

“I'm fine.” I gagged again but nothing came up. “Really, I'm fine.”

“We need to get you off this plane. Get you checked out. Are you okay to walk?”

“Yes. I'm good.”

Teo offered me a hand and helped pull me up off the floor. I rinsed my mouth and splashed cold water on my face before letting him lead me from the bathroom to the emergency hatch and the inflatable slide which had been deployed even though the jet seemed in relatively good shape, all things considered. Emergency responders pulled up on the tarmac as we made our way from the plane and the pilot and attendants joined us.

Teo arm tightened around me, supporting me on my weak, shaking legs as he hurried me over to the ambulance.

“I need to get her checked out.”

“Of course, sir. We're going to check each one of you to make sure that you are okay after that emergency landing. Does she have visible injuries?” The EMT asked.

“No, but she began vomiting right after we landed.”

“It could be motion sickness from the bumpy landing, or it could be a concussion. Did she hit her head during the landing?”

“I don't think so, but everything happened so fast. We were jostled around a lot. Did you hit your head?” Teo finally asked me, and I shook my head.

“No, I didn't hit my head.”

“Here, look this way for me.” The EMT shined a flashlight in my eyes one at a time as he studied them. He had me follow his finger and a bunch of other silly steps there were unnecessary but I let him do his job. “Everything appears to be fine.” He finally announced.

“Everything is not fine,” Teo said angrily. “She threw up. Throwing up is not normal.”

“No,” the EMT said calmly. “But throwing up after such a rough landing could be normal the same way a person might throw up after being on a roller coaster. It's a natural response.”

“Do you know who I am? I want her checked out thoroughly.”

“Of course, sir. We can take her to the emergency room and let them check her out to make sure there's nothing that we are unable to assess in the field. They can do a CT or an MRI.”

“Good. Then we'll do that.”

“No. We won't,” I said firmly, knowing that I was going to have to tell Teo about the baby a lot earlier than I had hoped.

“What do you mean we won't? You need to go to the hospital and get checked out. You were throwing up.”
