“Yes. It was pretty painful for a day or two. These scratches are nothing.”

“I don’t like that she touched you. The things Maddie said Mayra did to her—”

Trinity covered my mouth with her hand. “One, Mayra can’t hurt me like she did Maddie. I’m not scared of her, and I’d kick her ass before she even tried. And two, can you stop saying her name? I don’t like it when you speak it.”

Kissing her palm, I pulled her hand away and entwined our fingers. “What should I call her, then? That dreadful ex-wife of mine?”

“Definitely not that. I don’t like you saying the word ‘wife’ in any capacity unless you’re talking about me. Just don’t talk about her at all. There. Problem solved. Subject closed.” She kissed me then jumped to her feet. “I love you, but I need you to go. I have too much work to get finished before we have to meet up to finalize the wedding invitations so they can be sent out.”

“You’re kicking me out?” It was my turn to pout at her. “But I don’t want to go back to work. Now that I’ve seen you, and kissed you, I won’t get anything else done at the office.”

She slid her arms around my waist and stood on tiptoes to brush a kiss over my lips. “How about you go pick up the kids, and by the time you get back, I should be done. Then we can do the few errands that need to be checked off the list before having dinner out.”

“Or—”

“No ‘or,’ Mr. Dawson.”

“Baby,” I groaned. “You know what you do to me when you call me that.”

Trinity’s grin was wicked. “Go. Get our kids. I’ll even leave my car in the parking lot overnight, which means you’ll get to drive me into work in the morning.”

“Or—”

“No ‘or.’” Laughing, she pushed me toward the door. “And make sure you tell Mrs. Hoffman that she doesn’t have to cook dinner tonight. Give her the rest of the day off.”

“Fine. I’ll be back soon. Don’t work too hard while I’m gone.” Bending, I stole another kiss. “I love you.”

Blue-gray eyes lit up. “I love you. Be safe.”

Opening the door, I reluctantly left her office. As I walked back toward the elevators, I spotted Natalie Cutter and paused when she slowed her steps. “Did you deal with the psycho-cuntface bullshit, or do I need to make a call to her daddy?”

It never failed to surprise me that Trinity’s father had been more on board with our relationship than her mother was. She might not say it to my face, but she wasn’t exactly subtle about her opinion of my being with her daughter. It wasn’t about our age gap either. She didn’t like how I’d treated Trinity, and I couldn’t blame her for it. Devlin Cutter had said from day one he didn’t want to know anything about our relationship. All he cared about was that I loved and protected his daughter. If she was happy, he didn’t give two fucks about the past. All that mattered were the present and future where his baby girl was concerned.

Natalie had gotten most of her information about my past with Trinity from secondhand sources, the majority of which had been gossip and more of a guessing game than the actual truth. But I still couldn’t fault her for how she treated me. I had put Trinity through hell. I deserved whatever her mom wanted to throw at me.

“Mayra won’t be a problem for anyone ever again,” I assured her. “She’s out of our lives now.”

“Yeah, that was what your divorce was supposed to accomplish. Yet she showed up in front of my child with the intention of harming her, while trying to embarrass her with some photographer looking for a quick buck and a juicy story.” She crossed her arms over her chest and popped out her hip.

The only physical thing Trinity and her mom had in common was the color of their eyes. Every other facial feature, especially those damn dimples, were from her father. That wasn’t to say Natalie wasn’t a beautiful woman. She and her siblings had won the genetic lottery when it came to their appearance. As far as I knew, every one of the Stevenson clan had the same blue-gray eyes except for Trinity’s cousin Violet.

When it came to personalities, I was of the opinion that Trinity took more after her mom than her dad, but not by much. The mixture of them both bottled up into the perfection that was the woman I loved more than life was explosive, to say the least.

“Natalie, I assure you, Mayra won’t ever step in front of Trinity again.” If she did, then the world would need to be afraid. Because she was going to be a fucking corpse when Anya got done with her this time.

Mayra had had her chance. All she’d had to do was sign the divorce papers, take the money, and leave my family alone. She hadn’t been smart enough to do something so simple.

This time, there were no more chances. She’d had the opportunity to have a good life, even though she hadn’t deserved it. As she was the mother of my children, I’d asked Anya not to kill Mayra when I’d first found out she had abused Madalyn. I didn’t want my daughter to feel guilty for her mother’s death if she, by chance, ever found out about her mother’s passing. But this time, Maddie would be more pissed than Natalie if I let Mayra walk away from trying to harm Trinity.

My children were good kids, but mess with anyone they loved, and they were just as bloodthirsty as the assassin who would end the headache that was my ex-wife.

Chapter 5

Trinity

I felt his hot breath on my neck, his arm around my stomach anchoring my back to his front, and his hard cock pressing into the seam of my ass. While his arm had me locked against him, his hand was already beneath my panties, his fingers spreading my lips and strumming over my pulsing clit.

“Jarrett,” I whined, squirming against him, loving the way his thick cock twitched against me. A few more strokes and I would come; I could already feel it building, the frustration and relief mixing together, causing a gnawing hunger deep in my belly that hadn’t been satisfied in so, so long.
