“I—”

“You.” He rubs his nose against mine and the doors open. “Come on, I know a perfect place on a balcony we can hang out at while they finish getting our room ready.” Looping his arm around mine, he leads me down a long hall. He forces me to turn with him when we reach large glass windows and a door. The cool air hits my cheeks and the sun is fully out, making my light jacket enough to keep me mostly warm.

“I’ve missed you,” he says, pulling me toward a grouping of patio chairs surrounding a fireplace.

“So much you didn’t answer my text message.”

“Only because the next time we spoke I wanted it to be in person.” We both sit down and he tugs my chair closer to his. “Are you mad I came?”

“What?” I lean in closer to him, reaching for his hand. “Of course not. The complete opposite actually. I think you sweetened the deal when you nearly made Isaac shit his pants.”

He chuckles, shifting in his seat. “The guy did go as white as a ghost.”

“You called me your boyfriend.” My voice comes out quieter than intended.

“I did,” he says confidently, as if he’s never been more sure of anything in his life.

“I…” I shift in my chair. “Why?”

“Why not? We’ve been doing things only boyfriends do, haven’t we?” His eyes capture mine, holding me in place.

“Yes but…” My throat goes dry and my words are trapped behind my heavy tongue.

“But what?” His face inches closer to mine, our lips merely inches apart.

“Are you sure that’s what you want?”

His face falls and he squeezes my hand. “I said I wanted you to be mine, didn’t I?”

“Yeah.”

“I meant what I said. I want you, Theo. In every way. Why don’t you believe me?”

“I don’t know,” I say, my voice shaking. “You’re so much younger and confident. You turn so many heads when you walk in a room and I’m worried you’re missing out on something more by wasting so much time with me.”

He presses his forehead to mine, sucking back a breath. “I’m not. Before I was wasting time. Now I’m making up for what I’ve lost.” He kisses my lips.

“You also never asked me to be your boyfriend.”

His laughter tickles my lips. “Theo.”

“Yeah?” I tilt my head, digging my nails into his palm.

“Will you go steady with me?”

I shove him in the shoulder, yanking my hand from his. “I get it, I’m old, okay?”

I look away and he forces my attention back to him by tugging my face toward his. “Will you be my boyfriend, love bird?”

My breath catches and I lick my lips. “Ye—yes.”

“Then that settles it. We are officially boyfriends.” He rubs his lips over mine and my hand lifts to his cheek, sliding through his curls as I thrust my tongue into his mouth. He likes to tease me too much and since he has no issues going after what he wants, then neither should I. If he is going to keep fighting to be with me then I’m going to stop standing in my own way. He curls his fingers around my neck to help intensify the kiss, his tongue thrashing against mine like a starved man.

My phone’s alarm has us both breaking apart, breathless. I pull it free from my pocket to read over the alert. “The early bird brunch is happening in ten minutes.”

His stomach rumbles and he looks toward the hard to miss disturbance. “Makes sense why I’m so damn hungry. My body knows it’s time.” His eyes crinkle in the corners.

“I’m sure,” I say, standing up from the bench and yanking him up by the arm. “Come on, little guy, let’s go quiet that stomach of yours.” He stacks my suitcase on top of his, laying it flat, and shoves my hand away when I try to grab the handle.
