“Damn it, Hannah, you biotch. Why’d you go and do that? I’m minding my own business, for Christ’s sake. Go be with your stud muffin over there and leave me alone to read about something I’ll never have. Get, go now.”

Holy shit. I look up at Presley, jerking my head to the door. He gives me a chin lift and one last worried look at Dani then leaves. I sit next to my girl and wait.

“What do you want? Don’t keep him waiting because I’m sure there’s a line already forming to get his attention.”

My head jerks up, my eyes shooting flames. Dani sees it and drops her head.

“I’m sorry, Hannah, that was so damn wrong, my bad. Just feeling shitty this morning, that’s all. Probably lack of sleep.”

“Dani, what’s wrong? You’re always so happy and easygoing. Did something happen? You know, even though I’m younger I’m here, two shoulders, no waiting.”

She gives me a small grin but that’s it. Then I see her eyes fill up. Oh no. I pull her close to me and just hang on. Been here and have done this with both Maggie and Auntie Zoey.

“I just feel like nothing ever turns out right for me. I’m all alone and it seems like there is no one out there for me. I can’t even find a guy for a weekend fling, for shit’s sake. Not that I’m into that, but it would be nice to finally be able to say no. And I know I’m not making any sense, but in two days we go back to Bumfuck, Montana and there’s nothing or no one up there. Well, there’s the Blue Sky Sanctuary folks, but I don’t know any of them except Ollie. I’m just feeling sorry for myself.”

Letting her vent, I already know what I’m going to do. Taking the reader from her after having to pull it from her hands, I place it on the table.

“Go get ready. You’re going to hang with Presley and me today, starting with breakfast. No, I won’t hear your lame arguments, move your ass, Dani. We’re starving, so up and at ’em. I’ll be outside waiting. Don’t make me come and get you, hear me, sister?”

It dawns on me when she was talking that everyone did shit last night, and no one asked or included her. When your lonely or depressed, worst thing is to be left alone. My bad. Got to keep an eye on her, just like she did with me when I first came back. She stands and starts to head upstairs, I’m guessing to grab her shit, but turns and flies toward me. I brace as she plops down again and gives me a hug.

“Thanks, Hannah. For a smart-ass kid, you’re not too bad. I won’t be long.”

Then she flies upstairs like a tornado with a huge smile on her face. I think to myself…my job here is done. Now to go outside and explain why my club sister is tagging along with us by my invitation. Damn, life is a journey, Auntie Zoey was right.

THIRTY-TWO

‘DANI’

After my shower and getting dressed, I’m just about ready to go downstairs when I hear Dotty ask me what’s up.

“Hey, I’m going to breakfast with Hannah and Presley. You want anything or want to come?”

“Fuck no, I’m so sore, just want to maybe get up in a little bit and grab some coffee, so I can sit on that dock that’s been calling my name for the last two days. Go have fun, little sister.”

“Yeah, right. What… you were born a few minutes before me, twin, not like years. We’re the same age, so give it up, Dottie.”

I hear her laughing all the way down. I head into the little kitchen area, grabbing my backpack then make my way outside. When Presley sees me, he smiles.

“Well, damn, a woman who can get ready in record time and looks like that too. You’re a keeper, Dani. Let’s go eat. I’m starving.”

Hannah looks first at him then me and back at him. Oh no, not happening. Then she turns and gives me a wink and a grin. Little instigator. She’s going to be a total handful, not sure our club is ready for her. Though we have no choice with who her entire family is, so going to have to deal with whatever comes our way in regard to Hannah. An example is our trip to the MMM23 book signing. I’m actually really terrified to find out what our punishment is for disobeying our prez’s order to Hannah not to go.

We make our way to a small coffee shop and find a table off in the back. Before I can even grab the seat next to Hannah, Presley squeezes next to her. I try to hide a grin but when I look up, he’s watching me, eyebrow up.

“Dude, so obvious, really? Don’t you have any game?”

He throws his head back and laughs. Damn, he’s fine, but also, even though it’s only been a couple of days, he’s Hannah’s. No doubt. We all start to look at the menu when a waitress comes to see if we want anything to drink. We all say yes to coffee and water. She moves off to get us that and we all go back to the menu.

I’m so hungry, could eat a whole cow and chicken coop. Shaking my head at how gross that sounded in my head, I continue to go up and down, trying to see if anything is going to jump out at me. Glancing up, my heart goes soft as I’m privy to the two lovebirds sitting side by side, staring at each other saying not a word. I grab my phone and before they even realize what I’m about to do, I snap a few pictures. I glance down, and dang, they all look awesome.

“You both owe me big time, will forward these to you later. What are you getting? Can’t make my mind up.”

With Hannah getting an omelet with hash browns and Presley getting a combination breakfast, I’m still not sure what to order. The waitress, a younger woman, puts our coffees and water down and grabs her pad. My two buddies give their orders, so she swings her eyes my way.

“I got nothing. As usual, can’t make up my mind, though I’m starving and everything sounds delicious. Might as well put their order in and I’ll try to figure something out.”

“If you want to put your trust in me, I’ll bring you something that will knock your socks off. Any allergies? If not, just give me the go-ahead and I won’t let you down.”
