“Oh God, he broke it up with her. He wants a date, a real date tonight. Oh, God!”

I was happy for her. Looking at her face light up gave me a good feeling and filled me with positive energy.

“You should go home and get some sleep so that you can be ready for the date.”

She hugged me and jumped around singing some TikTok song I clearly couldn’t remember. “Have a great shift. I managed to get us back on the same shift next week.”

“You have a great date. And text me, okay?”

The day dragged. Each time I wasn’t crazy busy, images of Soren flashed in front of my inner eye. I could see everything, especially his eyes and the way a few tiny wrinkles appeared in the corner of his eye each time he smiled. Fuck. He was even drop-dead gorgeous when he was passed out.

Work was always fun and had a way of distracting me, but I had a long day ahead of me, and my mind was analyzing the facts. What were the facts?

Soren knew my grandma’s name. That was nothing unusual. Ruby. Many people knew her. She was sweet, and she was a good person. The unusual part was that there was a picture of my Granny with him during her youth.

Warm memories of Granny entered my soul. She was close to me and would always be. After my mom died, she took me in and always made me feel loved. I had a beautiful childhood thanks to her. She was always there. She made pies for bake sales and never missed the parent-teacher conferences. My life here in Prudence was a happy one. After I left, she missed me but never tried to guilt-trip me. She was always supportive, and our phone calls felt good.

I was happy that I could be with her when she died two years ago. It was sudden. She called, telling me she had caught the flu. I returned home even though she assured me she would be all right , but Granny always said she was fine. Nick didn’t join me because he already had an affair with Brenda, even though I didn’t know. I found out much later.

Brenda was the one who could give him babies, babies he wanted, and I couldn’t have. We tried so many methods of getting pregnant. I did it for him. He wanted kids, the name, the legacy. I was okay with not having them, but I loved that man with all my heart and couldn’t disappoint him. Each time my test was negative, or I had my period, I saw a look of hatred on his face. Even now, I don’t hate him. At least I don’t hate him for leaving me. I hate him for having the affair and hiding it from me.

I had to move my eyes from the point on the wall I was focusing on and back to my charts. The doctor discharged a few patients, and I had to make sure the paperwork was okay. Focus, Yana. Stop thinking about the hot crazy man’s chest and abs.

The sound of the station’s phone ringing made me shiver. I picked it up without thinking.

“Yana, it’s Dino at the main door. You have a delivery.”

“Can you keep it until the end of my shift, please?”

“Sure, Yana. I can bring it up if you like.”

“Just keep it, please.”

“It could get cold.”

“Why are you so mysterious?”

Dino laughed. He was our chief of security. Well, he was the senior security guy. One day he decided he wanted to be called chief of security. Our hospital was not in a dangerous location. Gil and Dino took care of everything. However, he was nice. I had known him since I was a kid.

“I’ll bring it up.”

“Okay, bring it up then.”

I put down the phone, mildly irritated by the disturbance. Some people have stuff to do and charts to fill. There were no bad cases on the floor today. At least I had that going for me.

When the elevator doors opened, I almost forgot Dino was on his way up. Paperwork was not my favorite thing to do, but it had to be done.

The huge bouquet of red roses attracted my eyes. They covered Dino’s chest and head completely.

“Yana, I could use some help here,” Gil called out.

I stepped from behind the nurses’ station. I was alone. Lily, the other nurse, was doing her rounds.

“What is that?”

Dino pushed his head up from behind the big bouquet. “If a pretty lady like you doesn’t recognize flowers, we have a problem.”

“I see they’re flowers, but why are they here?”
