“Sexted. You know, when things get hot, and he tells you something, you tell him something, and you show him a pic of your tits.” Aly blushed deeply as she tried to keep going. “Did you do that? Did you flash a stranger over the internet?”

“No!”

Aly giggled. “Don’t diss it until you try it. Okay? It was one of the hottest things I have ever felt. God, that man had a way with words.”

“And?

“We met up, but he was a basement dweller. I couldn’t go through with it. He was so much better in my mind, and before I saw his stainedStar Warst-shirt.”

“Oh, Aly, you know how to pick ‘em.”

“Right? I suck when it comes to guys. I swear.”

We both laughed.

I did my best to allow the rest of the day to pass, but I was obsessed. My phone became an instrument of torture that I picked up every few minutes in the hope that there would be something from Soren. Why didn’t he call me? When will I see him again?

Will I see him again?

The line between fear and arousal is extremely thin, and this guy pushed me to balance on that line.

I fucking loved it.

I cursed myself for accepting the date with Karl. I didn’t see it as such, but he dropped the word date at least three times in the last five minutes since he picked me up. He even tried to put his hand on my leg, but I managed to shrug away.

“Karl, are you sure this is the right place?”

More than twenty years have passed since I was here the last time. The Old Mill used to be where we would meet and party. I loved it there when I was still in high school.

When I got home from work, only Spike was waiting for me. I had a weird hope I’d find Soren there. Each day, each minute that passed since I saw him last made me fear I’ll never see him again. Annoyed with myself, I tried my best to push all this away. If he wants to see me, he will, I tried to remind myself. After talking to Aly, I allowed her to send me a few links to dating podcasts and slid down that slippery slope.

Is it wrong for me to hope that he gets shot again and will need my help? I should never wish for someone to get injured.

Despite Karl being in the car, my mind was trapped with the hot biker wolf guy. Even during my teens, I was not concerned with beauty. I never dreamed of the most beautiful guy. I had other values but seemed to have forgotten them since Soren stormed into my life and ruined my linoleum.

When Karl parked at the edge of the forest, I was surprised that we had already arrived. We stepped out of his Honda into the darkness. I turned on my flashlight. It provided a ray of light that barely did anything to disperse the gasping maw of darkness that threatened to swallow us. Fear slid up my spine like a snake had poisoned my blood.

“Are you sure we are right here?”

Karl grabbed my hand. His cold, moist fingers pushed between mine. “I’ll protect you. Let’s go. It’s a short walk to the river.”

He took the lead.

“I’ll be okay.” I pulled my hand out of his. “I’ll walk behind you.”

Not even the darkness could hide his disappointment, but I refused to hold his cold, clammy hand.

Ugh.

Karl was a nice guy. He was non-threatening and, until tonight, was still a friend. I couldn’t imagine myself dancing the horizontal mambo with him. On the other hand, Soren made me wet like a flood.

The darkness felt like a protective shroud around my feverish mind. We walked on a small path that led us between trees. The river was close by. I could hear it. Memories from my youth rose inside my mind.

The Old Mill stood in front of us. No idea why we called it that because it used to be a house that belonged to one of the original founding families until dramatic events happened and the house was abandoned. After that, it became a party spot.
