“Alistair, he dropped such a bomb, telling me to leave. And here we are, and you’re trying to act as if nothing happened.”

“What do you need me to tell you?”

“Why was he against me?”

“He isn’t.”

“I had an entirely different perspective.”

“He is against the concept of mates.”

“Why?”

“Yana, this is not important. You don’t need to see Alistair. I will deal with it. I will send him away from here.”

“Who are you? Are you so afraid of having one honest conversation that you prefer to send a pack mate away?”

“You feel uncomfortable with him. Even though I’m his alpha, I can’t always control what he spits out.”

Yana stood up and pushed me away from her. “This is madness. I want to leave. Now.”

“Okay, I understand. I’ll drive you.”

“I’ll call myself an Uber. I can’t handle being with you on the motorcycle.”

She pulled out her phone. I still didn’t understand what was going on. She was okay outside.

Yana checked her phone. “I can’t get a signal.”

“I can drive you with a car if you like.”

“I don’t want to see you. I need a break. I was blind and slipped into something possibly wrong for me.”

Yana ran down the stairs, and I felt like a fucking idiot.

“Yana, wait. Can Torin drive you?”

“Yes. Okay. Whatever.”

Yana

Torindrove me home. I looked out of the window all the time. He didn’t ask anything, and I was grateful.

Darkness kissed the sky when I opened the door. My house waited for me, empty, like a dragon’s mouth.

“Spike?” I called to my cat, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Opening the fridge, I took a small container of ice cream, stuck a spoon into it, and then took it into the living room where I sat on the sofa. Picking up the remote, I turned on the TV and switched toSupernatural. I need to think, and ice cream helps.

Since this mating thing happened, I felt my emotions heightened. They would climb new mountains of crazy and then dip low into pits of despair.

Spike landed on my shoulder with a thud. He rubbed himself against me before sliding on my lap.

“What have I done? Have I acted like a crazy person?”

Spike’s content purring calmed my fragile nerves.

“You don’t care, right?”
