I flashed my eyes red toward him.

He replied with a weak, yellow flicker. “I’m a beaver shifter. Please don’t hurt me, wolf.”

“So, you know what I am?”

He shivered and leaned his head to the side, exposing his neck.

“I’m weak. I can shift only during the full moon. Please don’t kill me, alpha.”

“I’m not here to kill you. I need to find Yana. Keep your eyes open, and let me know if you find anything.”

I took his phone from his desk and typed my phone number into it. He was still shivering as I made my way toward the elevator.

“Aly, the other nurse, is her friend.” He was behind me. His hand stretched as if he wanted to touch my shoulder. Instead, he knelt before me.

“Where is she?”

“She’s not working, but I have her number. Do you want me to call?”

“Yes. What about Karl?”

“He’s working, sir. I mean alpha.”

“I’ll go pay him a visit. I don’t want to be disturbed.”

“I’ll turn the security cameras off, sir.”

“Good boy.”

I tapped the beaver shifter on his cheek. He was weak and not a fighter but could still prove useful if I gave him a chance.

I stepped into the elevator and was confronted with my own feral stare. My eyes burned red. I was about to set the world on fire. My gut kept telling me something was wrong and that Yana was not safe. If something, anything was about to happen to her, I would have killed them all, young and old. I would not discriminate.

The elevator ride was short. As soon as the doors slid open, the strong scent of chemicals burned my nose. I could also smell the stench of death, but the chemicals bothered me more. Death was normal. It didn’t disturb me at all.

The door was locked. I took my time and pressed the doorbell. I looked forward to seeing Karl’s dumb face as he confronted a wolf.

Karl stepped close to the door, saw me, and stepped back. How naive was he to think the lock would keep me out. It would have been a horrible lie if I said opening the door was hard.

I pushed one of my open palms onto the surface of the door. The lock shattered, and I stepped inside, inhaling the stench of burning substances and death.

Karl ran. What a mistake.

“You can run, but you can’t hide.”

I started to whistle. My wolf wanted out, but I couldn’t let it. I had to be able to use my voice and my human mind.

“Karl, my friend, is this any way to behave around me?”

I stepped through the swinging door and saw him. He was standing behind an open door of the body storage units with a saw in his hand.

“Really?”

“What do you want from me?”

“You know what I want.”

Karl stunk of fear. My wolf went crazy. His body smelled of adrenaline. His eyes were scared, darting to the left and right, and his pupils were dilated.
