Today was the day I would be united with Soren on the day of the Winter solstice.

The window was open, but I wasn’t affected by the cold anymore.

A loud knock on the door warned me, even though I had heard her steps long before when she parked in the driveway and took the steps two at a time.

“Who’s the happy bride?” Aly called out to me with a huge smile and a bottle of champagne in her hand.

“Girl, that’s me, I assume.”

“Yes, and let’s get you ready, shall we?”

I smiled and hugged my best friend. She came to terms with the fact that my fiancé, my mate, was a huge wolf and could shift. More than that, she had started dating Will. Cute, shy bookworm Will was head over heels for his mate, crazy, loud, sweet Aly. I couldn’t be happier having her as a sister and not only as a friend.

“Get that booty moving. We have an appointment.”

Soren grumbled from under the covers. Even though Aly insisted he should sleep elsewhere, neither of us was willing to do so.

I felt it again as I stepped into the shower. It was a power that hummed inside me since the day my father gave his life and power to save me. I talked to our bookworm and librarian, but not even Will knew what it was that did this to me.

It was not a bad feeling. It was just unusual. I was stronger, faster, my body was lean and more muscular, and I just felt great. I had to tell Soren about it, but between all the great sex we had, and the fact that they hunted more now that they were in alliance with the Chicago pack, I didn’t want him to be worried.

The ceremony was prepared inside the small clearing where Soren and I made love. Crisp snow covered the ground. As I rode on Gunnar’s back, I saw them all waiting. Soren wore a traditional Swedish gown with a sword around his waist. I picked a silky number in deep blue. I didn’t feel like being a traditional bride. Nothing about this life was traditional.

As soon as we entered the clearing, Aly jumped off Gunther’s back and stood beside me. Will, who was next to Soren, blushed deeply.

“I’m so happy for you, Yana.” Aly jumped into my arms and gave me one of her full, wild hugs. It was so good not having to keep my life a secret from her.

“I see. Will and I think you’re next.”

“Fuck, I wildly love that nerdy wolf,” Aly whispered into my ear. I saw the glint of passion and true love between them.

As I started walking, Gunnar and Gunther howled, still in wolf form.

A tall, thin woman clad in white stood in front of us. She was part of a coven of witches and would invoke the gods. She spoke a language I should not have understood but still made sense to me.

“My mate.” Soren cleared his throat and spoke to me, his green eyes vibrant, melting me to the bone. “The night I stormed into your kitchen changed my life. I love you to my last breath, to my last drop of blood, and my last heartbeat. I’ll burn the world to protect you. I swear to hold your hand when you need me, but also when you don’t, and to always put myself between you and a blade.”

“I love you, Soren, and want to spend my life with you.”

Soren’s eyes locked on me. I felt something unleash inside me. A deep howl filled the air, and it was followed by more. My bones shifted. I saw myself falling, changing, shifting. And suddenly, I saw Soren, who shifted inside my head.

“Breathe, Yana. It’s all good. You are a wonder. You are the first female Frost Wolf in over one thousand years.”

I couldn’t keep my wits about me because the world was different. New senses came to life. I felt the snow under my paws and could hear every heartbeat. Trying to use my mouth, I failed. This mouth was not made for speech. Sharp teeth and long fangs lined my gums. A low growl and a bark left my throat.

“Am I a wolf?” I asked Soren with my mind. An image of a silver and white wolf flashed through my head.

“You are, and you’re absolutely gorgeous.”

“Can we run?”

“We can do whatever you like, my mate.”

I ran, but I never enjoyed running the way I do now. My muscles, my body, my paws moved as if everything had a mind of its own. The snow crunched underneath my paws. I ran like crazy.

Soren followed me. He would run toward me, snapping at me playfully, and I would snap back at him. Everything looked different. I felt like a newborn who saw the world with new eyes for the first time.

“Where are we going?” I asked Soren over our mental connection. My breath hitched in my mind, but my wolf body was not taxed by the exercise.
