"Let's go, then," Robert demanded and turned toward the door.

Arabella stepped in front of him with her hands out. "Wait! We have no strategy for defeating a dragon, no plan. We don't know anything—"

"This is a rescue mission only. There will be no engaging of the dragon, only stealth as we save Rose and Clawdia." He patted her shoulder.

She still looked uncomfortable. "This feels like—"

Laurence interrupted her, "Someone needs to stay here with me to help protect Sigurd in case it is a trap."

Savida looked at Daithi, who had been incredibly well behaved, and offered him a reward. "We will stay here. If we are attacked, we can portal the protector away."

"Portals—" Danica started.

"Are open within the realm," Daithi finished.

"Convenient," she said and relaxed against the wall again.

"We'll take two cars. I'll take Omaira and Danica. Isaac and Arabella, you take the other car, but no one approaches the warehouse until we are all together. We need to assess the situation before we do anything rash," Robert told them, and they nodded, picking up coats and bags before heading out of the room, into the corridor, and out of the hotel. Alcor and I followed close behind.

"I'll call the council on our way," Danica said as she closed the car door.

I opened the door to the backseats of the other car and held out a hand to usher Alcor in when Arabella stopped us. "What do you think you are doing?" she asked.

We looked at each other before I told her, "We are coming with you."

She laughed. Once. "No, you aren't. You aren't trained for—"

I interrupted her, in no mood to be spoken down to. "I am a titan, a previous fighter slave, and Clawdia is my soul pair. I am going with you."

She sighed and lowered her eyes in acceptance before turning them to Alcor with a glare. "And you?"

His smile spread slowly across his face, and his eyes darkened. "You know exactly what I am capable of, Ari. I won't be leaving your side until we get a chance to talk."

She swallowed thickly. "Alcor …"

"Everything okay? Are we going?" Isaac swung an arm around her, and she straightened, the emotion on her face falling away.

She nodded. "We're going."

Alcor and I got into the back of the car with Arabella and Isaac in the front. Savida waved from the front door of the house, calling, "Bring Clawdia back safely."

The silence was tense between Arabella and Alcor, but Isaac either didn't see it or pretended not to as he reversed the car out of the drive and then started down the residential road. "So, a demon. I have so many demonkin friends who would love to be chatting with you right now. You look a lot more fearsome than they do, though, and I think that would hurt their egos. They like to think they are hot shit with little horns on their heads, but I bet it mirrors the little horns in their pants. No chance of that with you, though, right?" Alcor barked out a surprised laugh, and Isaac nodded knowingly, looking back at us through the rearview mirror. "Yeah, I thought so."

"Can you not talk about dicks every time you meet someone new?" Arabella asked with a roll of her eyes but a slight red tint to her cheeks.

"It's my way of assessing the competition, babe," he joked. Arabella's smile turned brittle, and her laugh was fake as she turned to look out the window.

Then she straightened in her seat and said, "We're being followed."

"Yeah, by Robert, Danica, and Omaira," Isaac replied easily, turning on the radio.

She immediately turned it off again and glared at him. "We're being followed by an unknown car."

"I don't think there’s anything to worry about—"

I stopped hearing what was happening in the car as Clawdia's panicked voice sounded in my mind. “Zaide!”

“Clawdia? What’s wrong?”
