I can't do anything right today.

And then panic set in because Zaide didn’t know that I loved Charlie. I’d been hiding my feelings because for the majority of my life. Our love had been impossible. I was a cat. But of course I loved him. “I mean—”

“What do you mean, you did something unforgivable?” Zaide interrupted, focusing on the other part of my statement. “You were asleep, and nothing that happened before was unforgivable, was it?”

I bowed my head and started to explain, “When we were in the cave, I met Baelen in a dream.”

“Who’s Baelen?” Charlie asked.

“He’s the son of the gods.”

Zaide gasped. “Has he been teaching you in your dreams? Why didn’t you tell us?”

"What does this have to do with you crying?" Charlie ran a frustrated hand through his hair.

"I'm getting to that," I told Charlie and then looked at Zaide. "He didn’t train me. I told him our situation, and he offered to help. He … When I woke up, he took over my body and used his gift through me to kill the guard. He helped us escape."

I watched his face carefully for … something. I didn't know what I expected. It certainly wasn't the feeling of pride currently flooding my system. A smile stretching across his golden face. "Little Cat, that is incredible."

"Is that how you knew what to do when we were captured and being drained?" Charlie asked.

I pursed my lips and shook my head. “I was getting desperate to save us and just searched my center for the power and then pushed it at the witches. I think our threads are for healing, so I wasn’t able to cause the havoc I wanted to."

"Little Cat, you were able to do so much with such little knowledge. You are incredible." Zaide kissed the top of my head, and my cheeks warmed with the compliment.

He doesn’t know what I’ve done yet. He won’t be so nice when I admit my betrayal.

Charlie, being naturally suspicious, asked, "Why didn't he meet Zaide in the dream too? Why did he target you?"

"He wanted to understand more about us, and I think he was afraid that Zaide would hate him on sight." I started but realized we were going off target. "But that isn't relevant. I need to explain—"

"So, you've just woken up from another dream with him and you're crying saying you've done something unforgivable. What did you do? What did he do? Why does he think Zaide would hate him?" Charlie narrowed his eyes, and I felt the accusations in them.

“He was making sure we had escaped, and we talked about starting training when he wasn’t drained from using so much power.”

“Get to the point, Clawdicat.”

“You need to know this stuff too,” I snapped before I covered my face, and I bit my lip to swallow a whimper. My emotions were giving me whiplash. I continued, my voice thick with tears. “We were attacked. It looked like the shadows of people.”

“Attacked? This son of the gods cannot control his own dreamscape?” Zaide asked incredulously.

“They invaded the dream. Baelen tried to protect me and fight them off.”

“This is just a dream, though, right? Couldn’t you both simply wake up to escape the attackers?” Charlie asked.

“Not before they were killed. And if you die in your dream …” Zaide said, shuddering as if imagining it had happened.

“Holy shit!” Charlie exclaimed and scanned my body, looking for signs of an attack. “You’re okay, though? You woke up. Did he survive?”

I bit my lip. “He was gravely injured and wasn’t healing. I fed him my blood.”

“Blood? Titans don’t need blood to heal, Clawdia. He is not—”

I knew what he was going to say before he said it. “He is the son of the gods. He is a titan. He’s just half a titan.”

“Akari,” Zaide muttered in horror. “A blood drinker is our trainer? And you fed him?”

I rushed to explain, to defend him. “He saved my life. He helped rescue us from the cave. I tried to nurse his wounds, but he was losing too much blood.”
