“She was scared we’d go in guns blazing if she told us where the Reavers were.”

Selina’s nose twitches to the side. “Yeah, I’d be too.”

“She was in a no-win situation, and her sole worry was getting back to her kid.”

“I know what that’s like. I left the basement to be with Jayne, knowing I’d be captured,” Selina deadpans.

“I believe she’d like some words with you, and I ask that you consider her situation going into that conversation.”

“I get she was dealt a shitty hand, but don’t expect me to overlook what she did to me. Jayne was put in very real danger, and I can’t say I’ll ever be able to function in the same room as her.”

I narrow my eyes at the redheaded beauty. “Then let me make this clear: if you cause an issue with that girl, you will find yourself confined to the holding until you can behave.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Blake says, stepping in front of Selina to stare me down.

“Don’t try me, boy.”

“Then don’t you fucking threaten to throw Selina in the holding. Are you forgetting what she brought with her? Cows, chickens, goddamn solar panels.”

“And are you forgetting what would have happened to her if one ofmymen hadn’t rescued her?”

“Since when did we becomeyourmen?”

“The moment you guys decided to follow me. I didn’t ask for command. I was the only one up to the task.”

“Guys,” Dane interrupts, “I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to pound some face in.”

“We’re not pounding face in,” I snap. “Not if we can avoid it.”

“Then what’s the plan?” Blake asks.

“We’re going to capture one of Gunther’s men, which shouldn’t be too hard with Amber’s help. Then we’re going to give him a message to give to Gunther, offering terms.”

“What kind of terms?” Dane asks, looking suspicious.

“In exchange for Russ’s daughter and Amber’s little boy, we’ll give them one thousand ready-made meals and some other things we have in abundance. We’ll ask Amber what else they might want.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” Dane seethes.

“Boy, an important part of leading is knowing when to make peace and not war.”

“That bastard beats women!”

“Trust me when I say that he will be dealt with, but first we need to get Georgia and the kid to safety.”

Dane’s hands clench into fists.

“He’s right,” Selina interrupts before Dane can respond. “We need to get who we can to safety.”

“Russ is going to be pissed,” Dayne grumbles.

“We’re not telling Russ. I’ll tell Christine to keep him busy, which shouldn’t be too hard, considering he’s been eyeing her from the moment she stepped off the chopper.”

Dane cocks his head to the side. “Seriously?”

I shrug. “He hasn’t gotten to properly know her yet.”

The room breaks into laughter again, which feels good. At least there’s one thing we can all agree on.
