MY FAVORITE GIRL

AMBER

Walking through the woods at night is a hazard in the world of the dead. Every snapping twig could garner unwanted attention and getting lost could lead to never finding your way to your destination.

After we made it to the tree line, we were joined by three men and a very disgruntled Christine. Despite being bound and gagged, she manages to make a ruckus, forcing us to keep a brisk pace.

Irma doesn’t look like a villain. She looks sad and broken. Like she’d just lost the person she loved most.

“Why would you betray Russ?” I ask her, genuinely curious.

Irma doesn’t answer.

“He’s handsome, more so than Gunther, though considerably older. Not that it matters. From what I’d heard, he treated his people well enough. Why go back to a monster?”

“How quickly you’ve forgotten who’d helped you when you were truly desperate.”

“Gunther did one decent thing for me, and for that, he turned me into a slave, using my son against me.”

“Stop being so dramatic.”

“Stop being so blind!”

“He’s trying to build a better future. Why do you think we took the doctor? You have no idea how hard it is to rule. He had to be hard, but things will get better.”

“You do realize that by taking Christine, you’ve started a war with Cole’s men.”

“Not if they don’t know where we are. At least you kept your mouth shut.”

I almost tell her that Cole does indeed know where their base is, but I hold my tongue because if Cole is going to rescue Christine, he’ll need the element of surprise.

“How many men does Cole have?” Irma asks.

“Countless,” I say, though I haven’t a clue. “And they won’t let you take Christine without a fight. That farm you want so badly—consider it under invasion the moment you move in.”

She chuckles. “Oh, we have no designs on moving in. We have fresh water and electricity in a place the dead don’t roam and the living keep away from. Why would we move?”

“I don’t understand…”

“Legion is a problem, and we can’t attack the farm. It’s too easy to fortify. Fortunately, Russ will do anything to get his daughter back. Getting them out in the open will make it easier to pick them off.”

I feel the blood drain from my face. “Pick them off?”

“The men, at least. There’s a place for the women.”

Through the darkness, I see her frowning. She hates that she not only has to share Gunther, but she has to help him find new women to fuck.

“Unbelievable.”

“We have to fight for everything we have now. Resources are precious.”

“Ninety-nine percent of the population died, leaving behind a shit-ton of resources. This isn’t about survival. Gunther is genocidal.”

“You should be thankful to find yourself on the right side of history.”

“Do you really think Cole is going to sit back and watch?”
