“Is that what he told you? Because if you think the Keep is crawling with women, you’re dead wrong. It’s why the Keepers keep patrolling the streets. They’re looking for more chicks to fuck before retreating from the surface. They don’t give a shit about you and would never attack you because what you do is necessary and they don’t have time to be burning the dead. Besides, do you really think you could take them? They have automatic weapons, cameras everywhere, fucking helicopters.”

“Shit,” big one mutters under his breath.

“Fred should have never trusted that guy!” Smaller one runs his fingers through his disheveled hair. “We’re going to get killed, and for what—nothing!”

“If you don’t raid the Keep, no one’s going to kill you!” I insist. “The Keep doesn’t want to kill anyone. They just want to ensure mankind survives, and that won’t happen with everyone dead.”

“Hey!” a voice calls from down the hall.

“What do you want?” big one yells.

A thin, wiry man approaches. “Caspian wants her brought up. They’re on the fourth, discussing this Keep they have.”

“He said to have the room prepared, and he wanted her in it,” smaller one huffs.

“Some of the guys are giving him hassle, and he wants to show them what the Keep has to offer.”

“By her words, it isn’t much,” big one scoffs. “She says there are only five chicks.”

The wiry man gives me a long look. “It’s not like what we have is great. I’d rather have three hot chicks than a dozen ratchet.”

“You won’t get anything!” I snap. “Not from Caspian.”

“Bring her up so the men can see her.”

“But what if she’s right?” smaller one asks.

Big one shrugs. “Then Caspian will have to answer for it.”

I’m brought upstairs to a room crammed with at least three dozen men, each of them looking unkempt and smelling like week-old trash.

“There’s my little ray of sunshine,” Caspian says from atop a table. His hand is extended down for me to take, and when I refuse, a burly man grabs me and throws me on top.

With a harsh tug, Caspian pulls me to my feet, holding my wrists above my head.

“See this,” he holds me out like I’m at an auction, “there’s plenty more where this came from. Quality pussy that’s ripe for the taking.”

“Lies—” I blurt.

SLAP!

My cheek stings as a metallic taste fills my mouth.

There’s nothing I can do. Their hope will outweigh any rational words I have. They’re going to fuck me. They’re going to raid the Keep. They’re going to win because while the Keep may have bodies and guns, they don’t know they’re dealing with betrayal from within.

And I had a hand in this because my presence validates every word coming out of Caspian’s disgusting mouth.

Caspian yanks up my shirt and bra, exposing my breasts to the gathered crowd. I fight against him, which makes the men laugh.

They leer at me, more than one shoving their hands down their pants. These men were once husbands, fathers, and brothers. Now they’re repugnant scoundrels.

“This too can be yours if you kill yourself a Keeper,” Caspian shouts. “They’re the men that own the women of the Keep. You shoot one dead, you take their bitch.”

Tears sting my eyes. I can’t believe how stupid I was. How I let Caspian take me from safety.

SLAM!

“What the hell?” Caspian mutters, letting go of my wrists.
