Page 61 of Cruel Bargain

The room shakes, and parts of the ceiling rain down.

Caspian looks at one of the gathered men. “What the fuck was that?”

I pull down my shirt and look around the room for answers.

SLAM!

The room shakes again, harder this time, and I nearly fall off the table.

“It’s the Keep! They’ve come to kill us!” someone shouts.

All eyes are on Caspian, who looks more than a little afraid. “The Keep doesn’t even know where we are. Heck, I didn’t even know where you were based until you brought me here.”

A man staggers into the room, grabbing his bloodied side.

“We’re getting bombed!”

“Get underground!” someone shouts.

All at once, everyone rushes to leave the room, pushing and pulling and trampling over anyone getting in their way.

Hands pull me, grabbing my arms and yanking me into the hall.

Women half dressed and looking like death pour out of another room, screaming as they rush to safety.

Jesus Christ, how could they live like this?

I struggle, unsure of what to do, worried that at any moment the ceiling is going to cave in on us.

In the commotion, the man who’d warned us grabs me, pulling me away from the Caspian, who’s too occupied to even look in my direction.

“Hey!” I cry out as his hand clamps over my mouth. He opens a door and shoves me into a room as the others rush in a mad panic to safety.

I fall to the floor, terrified of what the man will do to me.

His shirt is still bloody, but he’s no longer grabbing his side.

“Give it a minute and they’ll clear.” His voice is calm, without the frantic tones he’d had just moments earlier.

Confused, I study him, trying to figure out what’s going on. He’s tall, with a dark, overgrown beard laced with gray. He looks stronger than the others, and I wonder why he’d even be around the Vultures. But I guess it’s lonely and dangerous to traverse this world alone.

“Who are you?” I gasp. “Why did you take me?”

“The name’s Cain, and I’m working with Hunter to help get you back to the Keep.”

“Hunter?” It takes me a moment to remember him because he’s rarely at the Keep, but he was the one that helped Alistair get my sister back.

“Why would you help us?”

“I have my reasons.”

“Oh…is the place really getting bombed?”

He chuckles. “No. I was EOD, explosive ordnance, and I set a few small charges in select places to scare the jackoffs I run with. Nothing big. When everything settles, they won’t know what the hell happened.”

“Aren’t you scared?”

“Nope. These folks are dumber than rocks.”
