The sound of Rose’s name gave me chills. She was behind this, I knew it. She was the one who probably alerted Edward to Jolie and my sordid makeout sessions.

“Can you get to her?”

“No,” he spat. “Tyler hasn’t even been able to visit her even though he’s tried. It’s just the women locking her away. I heard her father whaled on her a bit the other day and she had to rest for a day.”

My anger mounted. I should have tried harder to get her away from him. After seeing him slap the shit out of her in the car, I knew it would escalate. Jolie didn’t seem the type to let him talk down to her. She was challenging him and he wasn’t used to that. He was no better than my own father.

“Can you get her a message?”

He hesitated but slowly nodded.

Just then, I heard the door open behind me and turned to see my cousin Ben coming over to me.

“I have a message from Father Lorenzo.”

“Not now.”

“I think you should hear it.”

Sighing, I moved away from the Caldwell loser and to the corner of the room. “What is it?”

“He says that Jolie escaped from her family and is hiding out on our side. He won’t tell me where she is, just that she will be at the club tonight.”

“My club?” I asked, knowing full well I was the only one who ran the clubs on this side of the city. Dumb ass.

Ben nodded, somehow knowing to not harp on the fact I’d lost my marbles. “What do we do with this guy?”

I looked back at the mess I’d left him in. He would surely tell Tyler I was asking about Jolie and I really couldn’t risk that.

“Take care of him.”

Ben nodded, walking over to the guy and taking out his gun and shooting the guy between the eyes. He slumped down on his chair, his hands falling to the ground.

“Come on,” Ben said. “We need to go and find Gunnar. He said his dad is on the warpath.”

What else was new?

“And?”

“And he’s been meeting with Edward and Marshall.”

He’d been meeting with the heads of the two families. That couldn’t be good. I guess there would be a deal struck soon enough, one I was probably not going to be happy about.

I got in Ben’s car, noticing the blood on my hands from the beatdown.

“Do you know who that was?” Ben asked me.

“A Caldwell guy.”

“His name?”

“No, why?”

“You don’t know how he’s connected with Tyler? How’d you catch him?”

“Vince brought him to me.”

“Vince is a knucklehead. He was probably seen, you know that’s a risk.”
