“I honestly don’t know. I th-think she’s crazy enough,” I shrugged.

“What have the cops said?”

“They’re still investigating, b-but they don’t really have any evidence to g-go on. My Dad has a private company looking into it t-too.”

“Good,” she nodded. “Whoever did that needs to be stopped. You could have been killed.”

“I d-don’t think my Dad and the guys will stop until they f-find out who did it,” I assured her. “How about you? How have things been since I saw you?” I asked, hoping to change the subject. Until we knew for sure who was responsible for the two incidents, I found it easier to try and put it out of my mind. If I thought about it too much, I started to think about those three monsters and every possible scenario if they ever got their hands on me again - and nothing good came from that.

“Oh I’m great. I’ve just been working a ton, trying to help Declan out as much as I can,” she explained. “How about we meet up this week? We can grab dinner and catch up?”

“Yeah…okay, but I…I’ll need to bring one of the guys, or Luca,” I nodded over to where Luca seemed to be keeping an eye on both me and the door.

“You mean your new, hot as fuck body guard?” she giggled as she glanced to Luca and blushed a little.

“He’s married,” I told her.

“A girl can dream, can’t she?” she laughed. “Is he going to be following you everywhere from now on?”

“For a while. At l-least until we know who h-hit me and messed with Dad’s brakes.”

“Someone messed with your dad’s car?” she gasped.

“Yeah,” I answered tiredly. “I can t-tell you everything when we meet up. Just l-let me know when.”

“Okay,” she nodded enthusiastically. “I’ll text you later when I get my work schedule for this week. Dec’s usually awesome at doing them a month ahead, but he’s been kind of distracted lately,” she sighed.

“Sorry. That’s m-my fault,” I admitted. I knew Declan had been taking way more time off to be with me than he should have.

“It’s fine. I totally get it, and like I told the boss man, I’m happy to do whatever he needs me to, to help out.”

“Thanks Fiona. I know Declan r-really appreciates all of the help you’ve given h-him,” I told her and she smiled just as Declan appeared from his office, a file open in his arms. He glanced up from it, his eyes instantly meeting mine.

“Hey, you’re still here,” he commented as he walked right over to me, closing the file and wrapping his free arm around my body. “Everything alright?”

“Yep. I was just catching up with Fiona.”

“You need to get home and rest. You’re shaking,” he told me as he looked me over with concern.

“I’m okay,” I assured him as I wrapped an arm around his back, just the way he had one around me. He smelt so good and I couldn’t help but snuggle into his side, allowing his body heat to warm my chilled frame. I closed my eyes for a moment and just relished how perfectly content I felt pressed against him.

“Do you want me to drive you home? I could stay for a while, maybe…”

“No,” I cut him off as I opened my eyes. Fiona stood before the both of us, looking down to where Declan’s hand was around my hip with a face I couldn’t decipher, but she dropped it in place of a smile when she saw me looking at her, then she turned and walked over to sit behind the desk. “You need to work and I am absolutely fine. Luca is here to drive me home and then I’m going to rest for a while,” I told him,

“Just make sure you do. That session was a lot when you’re still healing. If I’d had my way we’d have held off another week at least,” he grumbled.

“I can’t l-lose any more time, Dec. With everything that’s happened I’ve already wasted so much time that I could have been using to get stronger. I won’t squander anymore. We were careful and I f-feel f-fine. Just a little tired,” I assured him.

“Fine, but I want you to call me later. If you’re still tired, or if you have any new aches or pains, we need to leave the session for tomorrow,” he warned. “And don’t even think about lying. I’ll know instantly.”

“I wouldn’t!” I cried defensively, but caved quickly when he stared me down. “It wouldn’t b-be lying, just omission,” I shrugged with a slight pout. “These sessions are important, Dec,” I added seriously.

“Not as important as your health. Nothing is as important as that. If we need to hold off on physio, we will.”

“But…”

“No, beautiful. I said, ‘hold off’, not stop. I know you’re determined to get stronger, and I promise you we will get you there, but we can’t rush it. Pushing when you’re injured could do more harm than good, and I am never going to allow that to happen.”
