“You’re r-really quite bossy. Do you know that?” I asked with a sigh.

“Yep. Get used to it, tiger,” he chuckled. “Now, get your cute butt home and rest. Call me later, yeah?”

“I will,” I found myself agreeing easily. I secretly liked this bossy side of him. It seemed to make me feel so at ease when all I had to do was follow his commands, taking away all of my fears of what was the wrong and right choice to make.

He leant in and pecked my lips, then threw me a sexy half smile. He gently pushed me off into the direction of Luca, who had stepped forward and was waiting at the door for me.

“Make sure she rests when you get her home,” Declan said as he looked to Luca, who nodded in reply.

“He’s n-not my bloody babysitter,” I groaned as I looked to Dec with annoyance.

“Just do as you’re told, beautiful,” Dec warned as he threw me a wink, then turned and strode back towards his office.

“You ready to go?” Luca asked as he stepped up to my side.

“Yes,” I replied as I turned and looked for Fiona. “Text me later!” I told her with a smile.

“You got it!” she answered with a grin and a wave.

“She’s…um…enthusiastic,” Luca commented.

“Yeah,” I agreed with a huffed laugh. “She can be a lot, b-but she grows on you.”

“If you say so,” he chuckled. He pulled open the door to his black escalade and took my hand as I struggled to climb up and into it.

I tried not to notice the way he dropped down to the floor like he was going to do push-ups, and checked underneath for any signs of tampering. I knew it was necessary, but I was trying very hard to live in the world of ignorance and denial. Considering what whoever this psycho, or psychos may do next to get rid of me, sent me spiralling and I wasn’t in a place to handle that. It was a whole lot easier to just pretend everything was fine, at least until it really wasn’t.

“W-would it be alright f-for us to stop at the supermarket on the w-way home?” I asked as Luca started out of the car park of the gym.

“Sure. No problem,” he agreed easily. “Any preference which one?”

“No. It doesn’t matter. Trent has b-been asking me to make him Yorkshire puddings, since it’s the only ‘Yorkshire’ thing he knows. I agreed to m-make him some,” I laughed.

“That’s where you’re from?”

“Yeah, well sort of. My mum moved me all around the country for a while, but I was born in Yorkshire, and it was where I l-lived alone before…well, everything that happened,” I explained.

“I’ve never been to the UK,” he told me. “Is it a good place to live?”

“It wasn’t for me, though I s-suppose that wasn’t the fault of the place – more of the people around m-me,” I shrugged. “Like everywhere, it has it’s beautiful parts, and it’s ugly parts. The w-weather is god-awful though.”

“Do you miss it?” he asked, and my answer was instant and easy.

“No. I c-could happily never return there ever again,” I replied. “There’s nothing b-but bad memories for me there now.”

“So you plan to settle here for good, then?”

“I think s-so. Dad is already working on my citizenship. He d-doesn’t think it will be an issue, since we already h-have proof I’m his biological child.”

“That’s good,” he nodded as he turned into the car park of the supermarket just a few minutes outside of town. “Sometimes the best thing you can do is hit the reset button and try to start over. Trust me, I know.”

“Yeah,” I agreed with a sigh. “I had all b-but given up when Dad walked into my life. I never w-would have had the strength to start again w-without him and Trent,” I admitted as a tear trickled down my cheek. The memories of how close I had been, and how very desperate I had felt, for everything to just end, flooded me and filled me with so much pain.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you,” Luca uttered, looking a little nervous and uncomfortable with my emotion.

“I’m fine,” I assured him as I swiped at the tear on my cheek hurriedly, then worked on unfastening my seatbelt, needing to focus my thoughts elsewhere and pull myself together. “Shall we go in?” I asked, nodding to the supermarket before us.

“Just wait for me to come around to your side,” he requested, and I nodded. The second he got out of the car I took a huge breath in and tried to calm myself down. How had I slipped down that dark hole so quickly?
