“I should be able to do that with my boyfriend.”

“So, I’m still your boyfriend?”

“Yeah. If you can handle my crazy imagination and freak-out tendencies.”

“Hey, I can freak out with the best of them. Let me tell you what happened when I tried to chase after you today.” I held up my arm.

“Damon!” She squeezed my wrist.

“Yeah, well, you can kiss me to make it feel better…up in your room.”

Chapter Forty-Five

Lizzie

There’sjustsomethingaboutthe first day of school. Excitement. Jitters. Puking.

I could do without that last one, though. That’s for sure. At least there was only five minutes left of this class. Then I could make my way to the Coffee Hut and drown myself in chai latte. Second class wasn’t until after lunch, so I had time to recover.

Recover. I laughed to myself. I’d made it here, stepping on cracks, without any problems. I could do this college thing. No problem.

Shuffling beside me snagged my attention from my daydreaming. So not good to be zoning out on the first day.

Everyone was packing up, so I followed suit. I hustled out with the crowd and turned the corner toward the coffee place.

And there stood Damon.

He wore baggy blue jeans, a tight T-shirt, and sunglasses. Propped against the wall, he held his walking stick in one hand and had his other shoved in his pocket.

He looked like he belonged here. Like he was any other student—minus the walking stick. That was the only thing that threw off the college-scene picture.

“Damon?”

He straightened, then held up a fistful of Blow Pops. I dodged an oncoming herd of students to get to him. His smile widened as I neared.

“I can smell your perfume above everything else.”

“Wow. That’s a compliment I never thought I’d hear.”

He laughed and held up the sugary treat he’d gotten me. “Come here.” He kissed my cheek. “How was your first class?”

“Thank you for the Blow Pops!” I said, still in disbelief. “You’re here?”

“Glad you noticed. Coffee, right?” He tapped his stick and shuffled forward. “Elbow please.”

I kissed him smack on the lips. “You came here for me?”

“Of course. First day of college, that’s huge.” He kissed me harder, then eased back. “Better stop kissing you, or I’ll really embarrass you in front of your classmates.”

I nudged my elbow into his gut slightly, and he grunted. “How’d you know I was going to go to the coffee place?”

“You’reyou.”

I laughed as I guided him to the student center.

“Like the campus?” he asked.

“Yeah. I got the hang of it.”
