“Good, because I don’t, so don’t let me fall on my face.”

“How’d you get here?”

“Mobility training. Told him I needed to know how to get here just as much as the hospital, since you’ll be here for classes for the next couple of years, right?”

Whoa. He’s planning the future. “Yeah.” I coughed through the surprise.

“Made it here today without any face-plants, which is good. Talk about a pride-puncher.” He shook his head. “Like I need any more concussions, right?”

I steered him to one of the tables inside the coffee shop. “What do you want?”

“Surprise me.” He skimmed his hand over the tabletop, then folded his stick.

I left my bouquet of suckers with him, then stepped into line. He stared forward, then tilted his head a little as if listening to something. His hands continued to skim the tabletop, tracing the edge. He reached out beside him, and his fingers found the window ledge.

He was figuring out his surroundings, wasn’t he? The guy truly and completely amazed me.

“Oh, look. That’d suck,” someone behind me said.

A girl was eyeing Damon, pity washing over her face.

“He’s so hot, too,” she whispered to her girlfriend. “Damn shame.”

My gut hardened at the chick’s flippant words.

“Wonder what it’d be like to bag a blind dude. You know? I bet he’s good with his hands.”

“But what else could you do with him?” the brunette said. “As cute as he is, other than a unique roll in the hay, what’d he be good for? Not like he can ever work. Make any money or anything. What about dates? Can’t really go to movies, or whatever. You going to the party tonight?”

I moved forward in line, listening.

“Should be rocking.”

I turned around. “I heard party!” I said, smiling.

The brunette’s eyes widened. “You a newbie, too?”

“That obvious, huh?”

“We might as well all have it stamped on our foreheads,” the tall one said. “I’m Jill. This is Rayana.”

I made a mental note that it was Rayana doing the boyfriend bashing. “I’m Lizzie. Whatcha drinking? It’s on me.”

“Sweet! Party’s at some guy’s house. I’ve got the addy here.” Rayana pulled out her phone and dropped me a pin.

“Great! I’ll be there. Sounds killer.” It really didn’t. Actually sounded like something I wouldnevergo to. But, that was the old me. With Damon by my side, I could do this. I needed to do this.

We went through the line and we got our drinks, chatting about classes and the campus. They were pretty nice, outside the fact they were ragging on my boyfriend.

I couldn’t wait to see their reactions when I showed up to the party with the guy they were just bagging.

“All right, girl. We’ll see you tonight.” Rayana waved.

“Seven. Got it.” I stopped at the condiment stand to get sugar for Damon’s drink. They’d not even noticed I’d ordered two drinks.Duh.

I hustled to the table and set the coffee in front of him.

“So, we’re going to a party?” he asked.
