“You heard?” I sat down.

“And it sounded like you’re ready to show me off, huh?”

“Did you hear the shit they were saying?” I sipped my drink. “Oh, guess what I got you?”

“Mocha latte.”

“No fair super hearing.” I slapped his hand.

“And yes, I heard what they said. I’m blind, not deaf. The guy at the gift shop who was helping me get your treat talked louder when he helped me. It was crazy.”

“People suck.”

He sipped his drink. “Hey, this is good.”

“You wanna go to the party?”

“Hell yeah. And I’m gonna show off my new dance skills. That’ll show those bitches.”

“You know that crap about the job and stuff they said isn’t true.”

He shrugged it off, but I remembered him saying something along the lines of him being worthless when he was passed out at the hotel. But really, what type of work could he do? It was awesome having him with me all the time, meeting me with treats and encouraging me, but he’d get bored with that. He needed something of his own.

“So, I’m dating a college student. Not sure how I feel about that,” he said.

“Meaning?”

“Maybe I’ll sign up. Can’t have you getting smarter than me.”

“Already am, but I’m okay with it.”

He laughed out loud. “My Lizzie has a wicked sense of humor.” He skimmed his hand across the table, and I met it. Threading his fingers through mine, he smiled and slouched in his seat. “They have a point, though, you know.”

“What?”

“WhatamI gonna do, LizBelle?”

Chapter Forty-Six

“NotsurewhyIagreed to this, man,” I said to Drey as I groped my way around the center island in my kitchen. “Never was much about the college scene.”

“You and me both.” He slapped my shoulder. “Dude. You’re getting around really well up in here.”

“Andrew hounded it into me.”

“I heard it’s tough to graduate from his training. You kicked ass hard, man. Got through that first round really quickly.” Drey’s voice trailed away, and it sounded like he might be near the door.

“We all set for your party?” I asked.

“Question is, are you?” Drey asked, his voice loud and way over high-pitched.

I patted my pocket. “Yep. Ready.”

“Popping the question. Are you sure you’re ready for that? It’s been only a couple of months.”

“Surprisingly, yes. And it’s not like we have to get married right away. I mean, if she even says yes.”
