“Cool. Can you bring me a bag of Blow Pops?”

“You got it, girl. Say hi to Vin for me.”

I kissed my finger and touched the screen. She really was a great friend. The best! Tapping the movie library, I turned the iPad for the widescreen view.

I edged closer to Damon, then set the iPad on his chest and propped it up as the movie loaded. “I think we need somePitch Blackaction. He’s the bad guy in this one, but not really.” Turning my body toward his so I could see, I rested my head on his shoulder. “What do you think, Damon? Can I put my head on your chest to see if it lulls me to sleep?”

“Sure,” a raspy voice said.

I about squealed. Eyes as blue as the sky on the clearest summer day peered down at me. A halo of golden brown around both of them really made the blue pop.

His eyes didn’t focus on anything, though. They were bobbing from side to side as if he couldn’t see?

“Damon?” I whispered. “Damon, oh my gosh.”

“Wake up,” he rasped again. “Wake up, you dumbass! I need to see her.”

I pushed up and went to reach over him to the table where my phone was. His hand landed on my shoulder.

“Wish…I could…wake…want to…you. Sweet voice…” His chest rose and fell rapidly. His voice was raspy; then again, he hadn’t drank anything in a long time. With fumbling fingers, his hand trailed up my shoulder to my neck and to my cheek.

I held my breath.

“Sugar…strawberry.” His eyes closed as he turned in my direction. “Want to taste.”

I froze. He must smell my gum. I’d just finished off a Blow Pop—strawberry one. Was he dreaming?

“Damon.”

His hand found my neck and pulled me close.

Soft lips brushed my chin, and he inhaled sharply. As if searching out my mouth, he skimmed his lips upward to the corner of my mouth, and I pressed my hand against his chest. His heart thumped beneath my hand. “Damon.”

“Sugar taste.” His tongue flicked out and a line of heat shot through my stomach. “Finally…taste.”

He sucked in my lower lip and pinched it between his teeth. Fingertips dusted my cheek, and I closed my eyes as they danced along my eyebrows, feeling their way. “Can’t see. Why?”

“Damon,” I said, which was difficult with him suckling my lip. “Wake up.”

He pressed his mouth to mine, his soft lips consuming mine, and he let out a long, deep breath. “Finally,” his voice was softer, and his body sagged back.

I pressed my hand to his face. “Damon!”

His eyes shot open, and his body tensed. His muscles tightened, coiling along his stomach, and his hands fisted. And he fell into a cough.

I jumped off the bed, tossing my iPad onto the chair. I smashed the nurse’s button, then cupped Damon’s face. “Come on, Damon. Come on.”

His head turned in my direction, his unfocused eyes shifting side to side as if searching for me. “I’m here. Come on. You hear me?”

“Who? Where?”

“It’s okay. Hold on. Focus on me.”

“Can’t see.” He reached out for me, his jaw clenching as if his head hurt. “Voice. You’re the voice.” He coughed, groping for me.

I grabbed his hands and pressed them to my face. “Yeah. I’m the voice. Breathe, D, just breathe.”

“Woke up.” He coughed. “Prize is…kiss.”
