“Okay?” Natasha said, turning silent to listen to what her friend had to say while soothing her by rubbing her palm against her arm in an attempt to lessen her fear.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you about the guy I met. You know it’s a secret, and we’d pay with our lives if words leak out, right?”

“Yes, I know that’s why I’d promise to keep it a secret,” Natasha promised.

“He is one of the famous young billionaires in NYC,” Jane said in loud whispers.

Natasha’s brain slowly processed the information, and before she could ask for his name, Jane spoke first, “I am really sorry; I still can’t utter the name.”

“It’s alright, I understand,” she replied and continued with her action while connecting the dots.

“Remember I told you about the feeling of being followed?”

“Yes.” Of course, Natasha remembered that very vividly, as if it was yesterday. Others in their group thought that Jane had a mental problem because she was always scared, lost in deep thoughts, and frightened to the core when she had the feeling of being followed.

Natasha remembered encountering the frightening huge men because she had decided to follow Jane at a distance to see if she would sight anyone, and she did.

“I understand. Just do what you think is right, okay?” She said, and Jane nodded.

“Let’s eat.”

Chapter 8:Rejection

Jane had planned to call back the company in the evening to tell them that she was not interested in the job, only to be stopped by Natasha.

“I can understand how you feel to some extent, but I don’t think it is wise to do that.”

“Alright, I’ll do it tomorrow then.” Jane, who didn’t want much argument with her friend, agreed immediately.

“Tomorrow is Sunday,” Natasha said, narrowing her eyes at Jane.

“I know that tomorrow is Sunday, Nat,” Jane replied.

“You know, and you still want to call her tomorrow?”

“But she called me today. Today is Saturday, Nat. She called me on a Saturday morning, so why can’t I call her on a Sunday?”

“Just because she called on a Saturday does not warrant you calling her on a Sunday morning or afternoon to render your rejection and reasons for rejecting,” Natasha said, but Jane just bit her inner cheek and did not reply.

“You’re educated, Jane, and besides, you already gave a promise of two days later. Just wait till Monday and do your thing.” Natasha said, looking completely like a mother scolding her girl child.

“Alright, Mom,” Jane replied, and it wasn’t the first time she replied that way.

“What are your plans for tomorrow after attending the service?”

“I’ve got no clothes to wear to attend service tomorrow,” Natasha replied, and it was Jane’s turn to squint at her.

“It seems this is your favorite line anytime the issue of Church is being raised, but not to worry, I’ve got a lot of clothes you can wear to church,” Jane said with a wide grin, only to have Natasha roll her eyes and focus on her previous action.

“Let’s go see a fashion show after church,” Jane suggested, and Natasha beamed.

“Sure, let’s go.” She replied, feeling happy that she won’t be going alone this time.

On Monday, by 7:47 am, Jane phoned the unfamiliar number that called her on Saturday, and after a few rings, the call was picked up.

Still putting the phone on hands-free mode for Natasha to hear, she greeted.

“Good morning, Ma.”
