Going to the ice cream shop from before, “Hello, good morning,” she greeted the youthful-looking man only to sense someone looking intensely at her, and that was it. The uncomfortable feeling from before washed over her.

“Good morning,” he initially said the first word still busy with what he was doing, but got startled when he saw that she was the one standing there again.

“Do you know where a job vacancy is? I am in search of a job,” she said, her eyes looking unsteady as she turned back more frequently than usual.

She wanted to relax here while licking her ice cream, but it seems she made a wrong move by stopping at the devil’s abode. Since she had already stopped here, it was better to say something than walk away like a fool.

“Oh, I think I saw one,” the man said, scratching his none-itchy nose.

“Where?” she asked, excitement evident in her eyes, even in the predicament she was in.

He gave her the location, and she hurried away from there after that.

Chapter 9:Mum, Dad, Guess What

Hurrying towards the roadside, she thought it would be better to board a taxi instead since she already knew the location. It would also help her get rid of whoever was discreetly following her. Her heart was beating vehemently as she prayed for the job to be hers.

Upon reaching the location she had given to the taxi driver, she alighted and looked at the huge and spacious building. It seemed that big companies in NYC loved to compete within themselves for the award of having the tallest building in town. Muttering a few prayers, she stepped in, her eyes not missing the mini billboard attached to the company wall, announcing that they needed some employees in various departments.

What she never expected to see was the large number of crowds gathered in the lobby for an interview. At some point, she felt like she didn’t have a chance but shook off the feeling immediately after it came. One can never know unless they try. Waiting patiently for her turn, which she thought took too long, her name was finally called.

Walking into the office with confidence, she sat down on the seat offered to her in a poised manner, as she was taught before, knowing that first impressions matter a lot. After answering the questions thrown at her, no matter how hard they seemed to be, two of her interviewers nodded in satisfaction, while the young man in the middle looked calm no matter how hard she tried to impress them.

“Boss, what do you think about her?” the middle-aged man on the left-hand side asked, and she had to refrain from expressing the shock that almost took over her. No wonder he was seated as a non-existent being, not showing any emotions and speaking when necessary.

“Out of the lot, you’ve impressed me beyond measure. That being said, you have gotten the job in the marketing department. Take the rest of the week to rearrange yourself and start working on Monday. Congratulations,” the young man said, and Jane could hardly contain her joy. Looking at them with a bright smile, she thanked them over and over again before finally leaving the office.

When she first entered the office, she had prepared her mind for the disappointment she would face ahead of her, as she saw the face of every single person fall after they came out. Seeing her bright face, some interviewees rushed to question her while the rest looked on to hear what she had to say.

“You got the job?” a young mother asked.

“Isn’t it obvious that she did?” another woman answered with a question.

“What department?” a man asked this time.

“The marketing department,” Jane answered, and they nodded, requesting the questions she was asked. She gave out the questions and the answers before heading out.

“Do you all think that they will be foolish enough to repeat the same question?” Jane heard another woman ask before she finally exited the place. Boarding a taxi home, she couldn’t wait to tell Natasha about her luck.

Seeing her friend coming in with a sad face, Natasha stopped her reading to interrogate her.

“What happened today, Jane?”

“It happened again.”

Thinking she was talking about the failed day again, Natasha started to encourage her friend.

“Not that.”

“Then what?”

“I was…” Jane drawled.

“You were?” Natasha inquired.

“I was followed again.”

“What!?” she yelled before hurrying outside to see if she could spot any suspicious person, but she only saw cars parked as they usually would.
