Whyhadhe followed me?

I didn’t think I’d asked him that.

She flashed me an apologetic grin. “I’m sorry, but you asked me what I think. I think it sounds like you’re probably fated mates.”

I sank to the toilet, my robe remaining tucked closely around me as I used the damn toilet seat like it was a chair. “There’s no way. You saw how the other guys were—they wouldn’t take no for an answer. And they were all, ‘me Tarzan, you Jane’. And—”

“And every man is different,” she pointed out. “Remmo is unseelie. He’ll respond differently to everything for that reason. Plus, you weren’t around any other interested guys, so there was no need for possessive Tarzan stuff.”

“Yeah, but he didn’t lose his shit when I mentioned Teris. He asked me about him, sometimes. He’d get pissy if I mentioned missing Teris or anything, but not if I just talked to him. And—”

“We went all out for that party, Sunny. Every one of us was there, and no one saw you slip out. I was watching. The only possible way he could’ve followed you is if he literally stayed right next to you the entire time. Why would he do that, when you were in love with Teris and there was a whole building full of single fae and human women who might actually want him? If he wasn’t your mate, why would he bother?”

“I don’t know.” I brushed a hand over my face, wiping away a bunch of stray water that hadn’t yet dried completely. “And it’s Summer. My real name—it’s Summer. I’m tired of being called Sunny.”

She smiled. “I’m Dakota.”

I held out a hand, and she shook it, pretending to be dainty. “Nice to meet you,” I drawled.

She put on a thick, fake fae accent. “The pleasure is mine.”

I snorted, and she laughed.

We both grew quiet, then. “What am I supposed to do, Dots? Dakota?”

“You don’t have to decide right now,” she reminded me. “But ultimately, I think you need to have an honest conversation with him.”

“But what if you’re wrong? What if we’re not mates, and I just screw everything up even more by asking him?”

She frowned. “We could go talk to January to get more details if you want. Or one of the other girls. Naomi is living here right now, so it wouldn’t be hard to ask her.”

I nodded.

Good; this was a good plan.

“First, we should sleep,” I told her.

She flashed me a grin. “Trying to avoid it, huh?”

“Yup.” I finally got off the toilet. “Remmo followed me here, so I know he’s probably waiting outside. And I might as well make him sweat a little while I hide out in here, after the lies he pulled. He sure as hell didn’t tell me that he was an unseelie general.”

“We should ask around about the Vuvim thing,” she agreed. “Maybe weshouldgo find January and Lian.”

“I can’t leave, or the bastard will probably follow us there,” I reminded her.

“Depends how dedicated he is.” She lifted a shoulder.

I thought back to the cave.

To the way he’d looked at me.

To the way he’d taught me how to access my magic.

To the way he’d wrapped himself around me in the tree on the way back, when he either heard or smelled my tears.

“He’s dedicated,” I finally said.

Her lips curved upward. “Good.” She grabbed the female fae tops off the counter, and held them both up. “Which one of these suckers can handle those melons you call tits?”
