I drop my head back on the couch and close my eyes. I say more to myself than him, “I haven’t felt this good since I’ve been pregnant.”
He hasn’t moved so I open my eyes again. There’s a pained look on his face as he watches me and then he says“Glad to be of service”before walking out of the room.
Chapter Forty-Seven

“You don’t kiss me whenwe fuck anymore,” she says, entirely too loud.
I choke on my water and start coughing and then look around to see if anyone heard her.
“Maggie, why don’t you stand up and tell the whole restaurant while you’re at it?”
“You’re doing it on purpose, aren’t you?” she says as she dips her spoon into her miso soup and brings it to her mouth.
Iamdoing it on purpose, but I don’t really want to talk about it.
“Oh, I kiss you,” I say while letting one corner of my mouth inch up.
She rolls her eyes. “Not on the mouth – or actually on my face at all. Just the neck down.”
She holds eye contact with me for a beat, and then I flick my eyes down to my soup bowl.
“I’m not comfortable with it right now,” I mutter.
She stills. I’m not sure she’s breathing right now. I don’t want to look back up.
I got tested the day after she came to my apartment to negotiate, and it’s been open season since then. She is insatiable. I have a lot of pent of sexual energy right now, so I’m happy to oblige, but I don’t want to kiss her. Ican’tkiss her. I know what we are doing is intimate, but it’s not intimate like kissing is. Or sex with kissing. I don’t know. I just know it’s a line I don’t want to cross.
Mercifully, the server brings us our plates and sets them down. She leans forward and smells her plate and then groans. I can’t help but smile. It’s so good to see her eating again – and enjoying food. She’d gotten far too thin. The fullness has returned to her face.
I decide to take this opportunity to change the subject. “Is it too early to talk about the nursery? Am I allowed to talk about that with you?”
She grimaces and then says, “Yes, we can talk about it.”
