He laughs. “Sometimes, but you’ve handled this well. Really well.”

Elizabeth pats my back. “I agree.”

“Thanks.”

Elizabeth kisses my cheek and James pats my shoulder before they leave. I stand in the hallway for a full five minutes before I return to the room.

Chapter Sixty-Five

Declan

“Oh, damn it,” Maggiemutters as she tries to get the stroller into the apartment.

“Need help?” I call from the kitchen.

“I need like six more sets of hands, apparently,” she calls back. I rush over and hold the door open for her so she can push the stroller inside.

“Thanks.” She removes her hat and coat. “I think he just pooped. Will you change him? I have to pee and then he’s going to need to eat.”

I unbuckle Ian from his stroller as Maggie rushes off to the bathroom.

“Hey buddy,” I say. He stretches and yawns when I pick him up. “Diaper time.”

Maggie settles into the glider in the nursery, breastfeeding pillow on her lap as I change Ian’s diaper. I pass him over to her when I’m finished, and she unsnaps her nursing bra and positions him on the pillow. As soon as he’s latched, she sighs.

“How’s Elizabeth?” I ask.

She sighs louder and then says, “Not great. They are announcing tomorrow.”

I lean against the changing table. “I know. Is she okay with it?”

“It was her idea,” Maggie says. She’s stroking Ian’s head as she talks. “Well, mostly her idea. It’s the right decision.”

“Yeah, it is, but not easy.”

“No. Not easy. She’s really brave.” Her voice catches a little. Elizabeth has decided to pursue treatment for postpartum depression. She’s stepping back from any public duties for a few months, and they are releasing a public statement in the morning. Right now, she’s going to stay at the White House and receive outpatient treatment. Maggie has been going over to the White House a few days a week to spend time with her.
