I sigh loudly. “Yes. I’ve told Will this like a thousand times. She doesn’t want a relationship like that, and I can’t risk fucking everything up. If I lay it all out there, and she still doesn’t want a relationship. Where do we go from there?”

“Does it matter at this point? Seems like you’ve done a pretty good job of fucking it up either way,” James says.

Will nods again. “Just talk to her.”

I put my head back on the table again. Will puts his hand on my back and says, “You love her, don’t you?”

I sit up. “Yes.”

“Tell her.”

James puts his hand on mine and squeezes it. “Sometimes you just have to take the risk.”

Chapter Seventy

Declan

James wanted to bringme back to the apartment in the Presidential motorcade, but I insisted on just getting an Uber. He handed me my passport before I left although I’m not sure it still works.

When I get to the door of Maggie’s apartment, I hesitate. What am I even going to say? As I’m trying to gather my thoughts, the door opens. She’s standing on the other side. Ian in the stroller. Her eyes are red. She’s been crying.

“Oh.” She looks at me and then around me like she’s trying to solve a mystery. “I thought you’d left.”

“I did.”

“Oh.” She pulls her eyebrows together in confusion.

“Were you going out for a walk?” Duh. What else would she be doing?

“Yes.”

“Can I come?” I ask.

She shrugs. “Sure, I guess.”

We ride down the elevator in silence. We walk out of the building in silence. We walk around the block four times in silence. We ride back up to the apartment in silence.
