She drops her hands. “I begged.”

My eyebrow shoots up. “You? Beg? I’m surprised.”

“I know. I realized we both need each other. I need this job, so I have to play nice.”

I study her for a moment. “And you are?”

She nods. “I’m on my best behavior.”

“Don’t be too good. He needs someone to give him shit.”

She lets out a loud laugh and then her phone buzzes. She looks at it and frowns. “It’s your brother.”

She holds up the phone. His number is entered asThe Senator.

“Senator Sterling. Is there something I can help you with?” she says, holding the phone to her ear.

She listens for a moment and then says, “Now?”

What the hell is Will doing? Is he calling just so I can’t have dinner with her? I watch her with a scowl growing on my face.

“Of course,” she stammers. She pauses for a moment. “Let’s see. It will probably take me forty-five minutes.”

When she hangs up the phone, she looks like she’s about to cry. “I have to go.”

I watch her gather her things. “Does he normally call you after hours? Is it normal for you to do work at night?”

“Never.” She slings her purse over her shoulder.

I stand up. “I’m sorry.”

“Me too. Thanks for dinner. It was delicious.” She shoots me a big smile before rushing out of the restaurant.

I plop back down in the chair and imagine how much I’d like to put Will in a chokehold and strangle him right now.

Is this because he doesn’t trustmeor doesn’t trusther? It doesn’t matter either way. It’s none of his damn business who I date, and it’s really none of his damn business whoshedates. She works for him, for Christ’s sake.

I pay for dinner and then consider going to my hotel, but I can’t let this go. I make my way to Will’s apartment. I see Olivia leaving – looking really shaken up just as I’m arriving. I don’t say anything to her. She’s upset, overwhelmed. I’m going to let her cool off but Will - I’m fucking talking to Will.

I pound on his apartment door. What a dick. I’m going to break down this door if he doesn’t answer soon.

When he opens the door, I shove him back into the apartment. I think he’s about to take a swing at me, but he just holds his hand in a fist at his side.

“What the hell, man?” I shove him back again.

“Declan, I told you to stay away from her.” I’m so close to taking a swing at him.

“You don’t own her,” I yell.

“It’s not abouther. It’s aboutyou. Declan, this is not going to end well for you.”

I scoff. “It’s not about her? Bullshit.”

He jerks his head up.

“Were you going to take her home?” he asks.

I just shake my head. “It’s really none of your business.”
