Chapter Twenty-Four

Declan

“Good news.” Maggieflashes me a big smile and holds up two pieces of paper. “We’re both clean.”

I wasn’t worried, but I smile back and say, “That’s great.”

She sets the papers down and stares at me – smoldering.

“Oh, now?” I say. “Are we starting this now?”

She laughs. “Why are you saying that like it’s a chore?”

I cough. “It’s not. I just didn’t know if you were ovulating or not.”

She takes two steps closer to me, her eyes flickering with desire. “It’s a little early, but sperm can live in a woman’s body for seven days.”

I choke. “What?”

She puts her hands on her hips and says, “Declan, you told me you were paying attention in sex ed.”

I cough a few more times. “I told you I was paying attention enough to figure out hownotto get a girl pregnant – not how to get her pregnant.”

One side of her mouth quirks. “I guess I’ll have to fill in the gaps for you.”

Another two steps my direction. My heart is pounding. I lost count of how many times I’ve had sex with her, but this feels different. Really different.

She pauses and takes me in. “You look like I’m about to take a bite out of you and not in a good way.”

I run my hands over my face. “I don’t know. I want to do this – of course I do. I just...it’s entirely different when you’re trying to get pregnant.”

She tilts her head to the side. “I didn’t think this would be so emotional for you.”

You and me both.

She resumes moving until she’s right in front of me. She lifts her hand and places it over my heart. I know she can feel my heart pounding, my chest rising and falling with each breath. “You’re more sensitive than I thought.”

She pushes back and turns around. “We don’t have to do anything right now,” she calls over her shoulder.

“Go away with me,” I blurt out.

She whips her head around. “What?”

“Let’s go away. Kick this off right. I’m really in my head. I think I just need to...”

I can’t even finish the sentence. I don’t know what I need. I’ve never wanted to be with someone and been terrified to be with them at the same time.

She shakes her head and lets out a loud laugh.

“What?” I ask.

“It would be your solution to run away.”

I hold my hands up defensively. “I’m not running away. You’re going with me.”

“We’re running away.”

I smirk. “Semantics. Fine. We’re running away. What’s so wrong with that?”
