“So Costa Rica?” I give his leg a little squeeze.

He smiles, his shoulders relax just slightly. “I have a house down there.”

“You have a house?”

His eyes dart to the side like he just realized he wasn’t supposed to tell me that.

“Um.” He’s thinking about lying. I just study his face and wait for a response.

“Yeah. Sort of.” He coughs and then clears his throat. “It’s really beautiful. Are you finally going to let me give you surfing lessons?”

“I’m literally all yours, Declan. Whatever you want for a week.” I’m keeping my voice low, my eye contact steady.

He rubs the back of his neck.

I sit up a bit straighter. “Why are you so nervous? It’s not like it’s our first time.”

He lets his hand rest on the back of his neck and then closes his eyes. “I’ve never been with someone...”

He pauses.

“What?” I say.

He opens his eyes. “I’ve never been with someone without using protection.”

I blink slowly, twice – letting this information sink in. I’m surprised. He’s been with a lot of women. We’ve always used condoms, but I figured that was just because I insisted on it. I wouldn’t have thought he would be such a rule follower, if I’m being honest.

His cheeks flush just slightly.

“I haven’t either,” I say.

His eyes widen just slightly. “Really?”

“Declan, I think you know I’ve never been in a committed long term relationship. Heck, you’re my longest relationship if that tells you something.”

He looks like he could vomit so I quickly say, “We’ll have our first time together.”

He laughs. “I’m honored to do it with you.”

“Is it really that big of a deal?” I ask. I probably shouldn’t ask. I should probably just drop it.

“I don’t know,” he admits. “It feels like a big moment. It is a big moment. We’re trying to make a baby – that’s a big thing.”

“Aren’t you looking forward to it?” I let my hand creep up his thigh just slightly.

“God, yes. Of course I am. I’m little worried that I won’t be able to go back once I know what it’s like.”

I chuckle. “Oh no. I hope not.”

He laughs nervously. “I know. It’s a real concern.”

The flight attendant approaches our seats. “Drinks?”

“Champagne,” he says. Two.”

She delivers two flutes of champagne a few minutes later.

I study it. “I’m going to stop drinking after this week.”
