Chapter Thirty

Declan

Ishould have talkedwith her first, but there’s no going back now. It was an impulsive decision when she didn’t get pregnant the second month and I hope she’s not angry or freaked out when I tell her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” She cocks her head to the side, studying my face.

I clear my throat. “I need to show you something.”

“Okay.”

“Follow me,” I take her hand and lead her across the hallway. Confusion is written all over her face.

I pull out a key and stick it in the lock. She drops my hand. “Why do you have a key to Mr. McArthur’s apartment?”

I push the door open. “It’s not Mr. McArthur’s apartment anymore.”

I step inside. “It’s mine.”

She doesn’t move and my heart pounds. I really should have talked to her about this first.

I jerk my head toward the living room. “Come on inside.”

She hesitates and then follows me, taking in every little detail as she goes. The pictures on the walls. The furniture. Bookshelves.

“You live here?”

“I will.” I pause. “If that’s okay?”

“If that’s okay?” she blurts out. “You’ve already moved in.”

I lean against the kitchen counter. “You’re angry. I should have talked to you first.”

“I’m shocked. Declan, have you ever rented your own place before?”

I laugh and shake my head. “No. I haven’t. I’ve never wanted to be in one place long enough.”

She pinches her eyebrows together. “So why the hell did you do this?”

I sigh. “Maggie, this whole thing might take a while. I figured it would be good for me to be around, but not in your hair all the time.”

Her eyes flicker with surprise. “You didn’t have to do this. I never wanted you to put your life on hold for me.”

“I know.”

We hold each other’s gaze for a beat and then I say, “Do you like what I’ve done with the place?”

She looks around and smiles. “I do. Did you have help?”

“Of course.”

She steps forward and gives me a big hug and says again, “You didn’t have to do this, but I’m glad you did.”

I pull her close and inhale deeply so I can smell her hair and a wave of relief washes over me.
