Maggie and Declan Text Thread

Declan: How was the first day of school?

Maggie: Apparently it is even more terrifying as a teacher than a student.

Declan: Who knew? I guess my teachers always hid it well. Did you show your nerves?

Maggie: Probably.

Declan: I bet you didn’t. I’m sure you were great. I’d fucking love to have you as my art professor.

Maggie: Maybe you’ll just have to audit a class.

Declan: Don’t even joke. You know I’ll do it.

Chapter Thirty-One

Declan

“What job did they ropeyou into tonight?” I ask Maggie.

She flashes me a smile. “I get to hang out with some very important donors.”

“Oh no fair, they put me with the teenage activists.”

Maggie tries to suppress a smile. “Well, that’s kind of perfect, isn’t it?”

“Yes. Only the jokes on them because all of these teenagers are much more mature than me.”

“I don’t doubt it.”

Elizabeth waves at Maggie from across the room. “Gotta go. That’s my cue.”

As she starts to walk away, she looks over her shoulder and says, “Make sure you behave.”

I wink at her. “You wound me, Buttercup. I always behave.”
