I watch her walk across the room, shaking her head the whole time.
Before I can return to my official duties, I feel a hand clamp on my shoulder. “Declan, I thought we talked about this.”
I turn to see Eli, his fingers digging into the muscles of my upper back.
“Talked about what?”
He takes a step back and studies me. “You are stupid when it comes to women.”
“Never said I wasn’t.”
He leans closer and says, “Seriously, how do you think this will end?”
“Eli, we’re consenting adults. We’ll figure it out.”
“You’ve been spending a lot of time in D.C. recently. She wouldn’t have anything to do with that?”
I don’t respond.
“Seriously, when was the last time you went on a trip?”
I still don’t respond.
“It must be some sort of record. I’m surprised that hasn’t drawn James’ attention.”
“Well, he is a bit distracted with his reelection and everything.”
Eli rolls his eyes. “His reelection is hardly in question. I don’t even know why we do these events.”
“Yeah. I’m not going to argue with you there.”
My eyes drift over to Maggie again. I just can’t help myself.
Eli sucks in a quick breath. “Oh my god, you like her. You have feels for her.”
“What?” I jerk my face his direction. “No I don’t.”
He looks back and forth between the two of us. “You do. God, this explains a lot.”
“We’re just friends with benefits. Nothing more.”
He gives me an incredulous look.
“If this is more than sex, why not be out in the open with it?”
“It’s not more than sex that’s why.”
“Bullshit.”
I hold my hands up. “Believe whatever you want.”
“She must have quite a hold on you if you’re not even traveling anymore. Honestly, I never thought I’d see the day.”
I put my hand on his shoulder, digging my fingers just slightly in the muscles of his upper back and say, “You have a really active imagination.”
