I don’t pay any attention to him and make my way over to Maggie. As soon as the song ends, I look her date dead in the eye and say, “Can I steal her for a dance?”

He does little to hide his surprise and then casts his eyes her direction.

“It’s fine, Hugo. Why don’t you grab us a drink, and I’ll join you at the table as soon as we’re finished.”

He smiles tightly before giving a little nod and walking away. As soon as the music starts playing, I pull her close to me. Really close. Much closer than I should for a dance like this. My hand is splayed over her lower back. Claiming her.

“Hugo, that’s a weird name.”

“So is Declan,” she shoots back.

Before I can say something else, she says, “You’re drunk.”

I ignore her. “Hugo seems nice."

“Declan, why are you doing this?” she whispers.

“Doing what?”

“Being a dickhead.”

I stiffen. I have no idea why I’m doing what I’m doing. I just know it’s making my skin crawl to seeHugo’shands on her. I can’t stop thinking about all the other places Hugo has been putting his hands.

When I don’t acknowledge what she just said, she attempts to change the subject. “It was a lovely day, wasn’t it? The weather was perfect. Even better than the first Inauguration.”

I catch Will staring at me out of the corner of my eye. He and Olivia are dancing a few feet away. He looks like he’s contemplating coming over here and punching me in the face. I turn Maggie, so I don’t have to see him anymore.

“Yeah. That was quite a day.” My tone is bitter. “Last time was fun too, wasn’t it?”

She hesitates.

I lean in until my mouth is almost touching her ear. “Will you fuck him in the bathroom tonight too?”

I feel the muscles in her back tense.

“Or was I special?”

“Declan, please don’t...”

“Will you let him take you up against the door because you’re so eager that you can barely wait for him to get his dick out?”

“Declan, stop.” Her voice falters.

I don’t stop. “Does that not get you off anymore? Too boring.”

She tries to pull away, but I’m holding her too tight. She can’t leave without making a scene. “There’s a balcony over there.” I nudge my chin to the corner of the room. “Why don’t you have him bend you over out there? I know how much the thrill of possibly being caught gets you off.”

She turns her face up to me, a single tear rolling down her cheek. “You’re an asshole.”

I am. I really am. When the song finishes, I let her go. She storms off the dance floor and heads straight out the back door without a look at her date. I follow her.

At first I can’t find her and then I hear her – crying. She’s slipped around a corner into a little alcove. When she glances up and sees me, she bristles. “Go away, Declan. Didn’t I make it clear I don’t want to be around you?”

“Yeah. You’ve made that pretty fucking clear.”

She lets out a heavy sigh. “Why are you acting like this?”

“Like what?”
