She opened her arms. “Hugs only.”

“Okay,” I said. “Hugs only.”

I found that a little weird but I went with it.

I hugged her gently.

She squeezed me tighter than I expected.

The hug then suddenly broke and she put her hands together and nodded at me.

I mimicked the same gesture, then we sat down.

“What are you drinking?” I asked.

“Pure, filtered water,” she said. “Nothing else should enter our bodies.”

Oh… fuck…

I ordered a beer.

You would have sworn I threatened someone’s life the way Emilia’s eyes opened wide.

“Oh,” I said. “Wait. You don’t drink. You know what? I’ll just have a soda.”

Here I thought maybe Emilia was in recovery and I was the asshole who ordered alcohol in front of her.

Nope. Wrong.

“Soda?” Emilia asked. “Do you know what goes into soda? The chemicals? Do you know what those chemicals do? You can strip paint off a car with soda! Is that what you want inside your body?”

“Actually, I wanted a beer,” I said. “But I thought… uh…”

I looked at the waitress.

She seemed nervous.

“I’ll have a water,” I said.

Emilia smiled.

What did you do to me, April?

“So, what do you do for a living?” I asked.

“What does any of us do? We’re just here. We exist.”

Fuck.

“I play hockey,” I said. “Professional hockey.SOLA Empire.”

“Barbaric,” Emilia said. “I hate sports. Anything that is a useless competition, what’s the point? Entertainment is a distraction. Think about it.”

“Wow.”

“And hockey? Are you the guys who fight each other for no reason?”

“I rarely fight,” I said. I smiled. “I mostly just score goals and get paid a lot.”
