"Earth to Ash, hello?" Colt’s voice brought him back.
"Huh?"
"Ash, what was the one piece of advice I gave you when you came in here?" Colt’s voice was stern.
"You said, keep your head down and your pants up-"
"Yeah, now, the way you're looking at Mr. Color-me-tattooed over there suggests otherwise." Colt pursed his lips and turned his neck to catch a look at Nix. Ash felt proud. Ash wanted Colt’s approval.
"You're fucking him?" Colt didn't bother to hide his surprise.
"No, he's fucking me," Ash replied silkily.
Colt's eyebrows shot up.
"He's gay?" Colt asked, still staring. Ash smiled.
"Details, Colt." Ash waved his hands, dismissing his question.
"Who is he?"
"Cellmate."
Colt's head snapped back to Ash. "Cozy.”
"Yep. And to be precise, we're not fucking yet... we're just edging together and-"
Colt hung his head. "Ash... your cellmate... edging…”
"Nix’s parents are Evangelical Christians and he hasn't spoken to them in years-"
"Ash-"
"And his tattoos are all based on Bible stories that he was made to recite word for word whenever he did something wrong. His neck is the Garden of Eden, he's got the rest of Genesis on his torso and-"
"Ash-"
"And he's got piercings, too, Colt, well they’ve closed up now but I didn't even know you could pierce the things he's got pierced-"
"Ash, stop," Colt raised his voice. Ash took a breath and realized he was practically salivating.
"I mean, is he affiliated with any gangs? Why’s he here? Does he pose a threat? To you, to the MC?" Colt asked.
Ash tried to bluff. “Come on, Colt, it’s just a bit of fun-”
“Ash, fun-” Colt sounded angry, for the first time in their friendship, Colt was short with Ash.
“He doesn’t look like the kind of guy who you should be having fun with, Ash, he looks like the kind of guy who would stab you in your sleep if you pissed him off-”
Ash tried to placate. “It’s fine-”
“Don’t mess with him, seriously, what’s more scary than a tatted up motherfucker in the dark?”
“Is this a joke?”
“A heartbroken, tatted up motherfucker in the dark, Ash.”
“Killer punchline,” Ash replied sarcastically.
