I swear that cat has ninja skills.

Cal’s phone buzzes on the table and he grimaces.Oscar, he mouths.

I shove my chair back, preparing to make a quick exit. There’s no way in hell I’m getting tangled up in whatever Reece is actually up to right now.

ChapterFour

Cal

Lily practically runs from the dining room, calling for Chloe to follow her. Of course my daughter completely ignores her mother with a shake of her head. The only one she truly listens to is Reece, which is both heartwarming and worrying at the same time.

I perch her on my knee and answer the call, “Oscar.”

“There’s an alarm going off over at the South Street apartment. Can you go check it out?”

I throw my head back and exhale. We have somewhat of a rota system in place for if there’s any issues, but I know tonight is meant to be Oscar’s night, which I assumed was the reason Reece was with him.

“It’s your night,” I clip back in annoyance.

Oscar takes a deep, controlled breath. “I realize what fucking night it is, but Paige is ovulating, and you know how I feel about her getting pregnant.”

I roll my eyes. Of course, I do, we all do. I practically know Paige’s cycle myself. Our whole god damn business can’t be run on when Paige is ovulating or not.

I sit silent for moment, going over conversations with Lily and Reece. “What club are you at?”

“I’m not at any fucking club,” he snipes back. “Haven’t you listened to a word I’ve said? Paige. Is. Ovulating.” He talks to me slowly like I’m a moron not understanding what he’s saying.

My temper rises, this isn’t the first time Lily has covered for Reece and it pisses me fucking off. The fact that my wife can hide my son’s whereabouts from me feels like a dagger to my heart, and I refuse to stand for it.

“I want Reece’s location.”

Silence.

Then, eventually, he speaks, “I’m sorry, what?”

I exhale and talk slowly now, pissed at Oscar’s lack of response. “Reece. I want his location. Now!” I demand, the tone of my voice makes Chloe slide off my lap, and I gift her with an apologetic smile I don’t feel. My clever little girl sees herself out and closes the door behind her.

Oscar’s breathing is whooshing through the phone. No doubt doing his technique he tried to show me once. Apparently, he was concerned I would give myself a heart attack. The technique was shit and my heart is fine. For now.

“Oscar!” I yell into the phone.

Oscar’s voice darkens. “Let me break this down for you, my wife is highly fertile tonight, Cal. If you think I’m going to help you locate your teenage son because he wants to utilize his teenage hormones accordingly, I’m not. Do it yourself. I’m not his fucking keeper. And while you’re at it, sort the fucking alarm!”

The phone goes dead, and I stare at it in shock.Did he just hang up on me? What the fuck?

ChapterFive

Cal

I instantly dial Reece’s number, surprised when he answers me the first time. He sounds out of breath, and I wonder if he’s been running? But this is Reece, and Reece does not run.

Sure, my kid is lean and lifts weights, but he’s no runner.

“Reece, where exactly are you?”

“Out.”

I grind my teeth at his attitude. I’ve spent so long in the dark where my son is concerned. I’ve never truly felt like an established father figure for him. I’m not in control, always feeling shut out and on the sidelines of him and his mom’s relationship, like they’ve created a whole bond without me, and I guess, in a way, they have. But I want that too.
