“Look behind you,” he said, and when I turned around, I saw the wrapped guitar lying in a corner. “You can play us a beautiful song,” he said just before I burst into a loud laugh and then walked over to pick up my gift.

Playing every day at Belly Row had opened up new ideas for both Cherry and me. Now that she had expanded her bakery, Tommy and I had collaborated to open a bar where I could sing, and also let other local talents display their singing talent.

“Aww, thanks babe,” I said after I picked up the guitar and unwrapped it. “I love it.”

“I know you do,” he answered with a smile, then came closer to me again for another hug.

I was still grinning when Luke came towards us again, and Tommy lifted Luke into his arms to cradle him. “He’s a daddy’s boy.”

“All right, everyone, there’s barbecue out in the back and everyone can go out there and have a good time. The crowd slowly dispersed, and once the living room was empty again, he set Luke on the ground to walk around on his own.

“So, what’s your surprise,” I asked as I put my hands around his waist and plastered my body close to his.

“If I tell you, then it’s no longer a surprise.”

Luke was holding onto my ankle now, and he was clamoring for my attention, so I bent down to pick him up again and kissed his cheek till he started laughing.

“He’s such a cutie is he not?”

“He is, and that’s because you are, too,” he answered before he came in for another kiss. “Now let’s join the others for the barbecue or else we’ll have to eat only cake for the rest of the day.”

We were both laughing as we exited the house to join our guests outside and the entire afternoon, I spent it laughing, eating, and drinking a little of everything there. It was wonderful.

It was the best birthday ever and was even more amazing because I got to spend it with the people I loved.

Afewdayslater,I was making dinner early when Tommy and Luke got back from a day of shopping together at the closest grocery store.

“Hey baby,” I greeted as soon as they walked into the kitchen, and I took Luke into my arms, kissed him, then hugged him closer to my chest. “How are you?” I cooed, then continued playing with Luke while he giggled and snorted.

He had a smear of chocolate on the side of his lips, and I turned to see Tommy indulging in some of it himself. “No chocolate before dinner, Babe, remember?” I told him then walked over to his side and slapped his arm playfully.

“Tonight’s a special dinner,” he answered before licking his lips.

“Why, what makes it special?”

“You’re making your special recipe for the casserole and roasted turkey. I think it’s a beautiful thing that you put in so much effort for dinner tonight.”

“You said you were having a client over. I want you to impress them.”

I grinned, walked over to him, then kissed him lightly on the lips before handing over Luke to him. “Take him so I can check the casserole.”

Tommy was a great dad and I loved it when he was eager to be with Luke every chance he got. After checking the casserole, the doorbell rang, and I straightened and then swiped my hands over the back of my jeans.

“They are here already. I’m not ready … Dinner is not ready. Do you want to get the door, honey? Or should I get it?”

“Get it, honey,” he answered, so I walked out of the kitchen and headed for the door.

The shock on my face, when I opened it and saw Danielle standing on the other side, had to be evident from the tiny shriek that left my lips. “Danielle?”

“Leah!” she cried out then dropped her bag and flung her arms around my neck for a tight hug.

My head was spinning, and I didn’t know Danielle was coming back to the spiraling waves that shook me.

“I’m so excited to see you,” I said as I pulled back and then let her walk past me and waltz into the house.

“Oh, this house is nice. Better than the cottage I used to live at.”

Tommy walked out of the kitchen. Then Luke and I laughed as they hugged each other before she took Luke out of his arms and kissed him too.
