She rises from her seat and extends her hand. I roll my eyes and stare at the crack in the wall, remembering my miserable life before. I look at her and inhale sharply before chugging my beer and coughing. She laughs, and I grab her hand reluctantly.

She leads me to the floor and waves her arms in the air. I awkwardly sway to the music, watching the humans let loose. How could they not care about what others think?

Jenna takes my hand and leads me into a trance. We stomp our feet on the floor and clap our hands to the beat. I spin her, and she laughs wildly, throwing her head back. I watch as she seems to move in slow motion.

I capture this memory in my mind. I laugh with her as we dance for what feels like mere seconds before the music stops and the crowd applauds.

“Come on,” she says, taking my hand. “Let’s get our drinks and get a room.”

I follow her to the main desk and retrieve our key before venturing upstairs. She holds her hand behind her, and I take it, thankfully.

The room is shabby and dark, but Jenna wastes no time flopping onto the bed, reveling in comfort.

“Oh gods,” she said ecstatically.

“What?” I laugh as I sip my beer.

“This is amazing,” she remarks, turning over and reaching for her beer.

I laugh and sit on the bed with her. We clink our glasses, a strange human custom, and drink until my vision blurs.

I wake up, dazed, staring at Jenna passed out next to me. The last thing I remember is laughing with her over some dumb joke about demons. I rub my head and turn over, only to come face to face with what looks like Yeelus.

I chuckle and wipe my eyes, wondering how drunk I must still be. I look again, and the obnoxious creature is still there, real as day. I gasp and look at him angrily before shooting out of bed and motioning for him to follow me out of the room.

“What are you doing?” I snarl as I close the door behind us.

“What areyoudoing?” he questions angrily. “Malaki is getting away, and you’re stalling.”

“How did you even get here?” I ask, panicking.

“What matters is you returning to where you belong,” he said firmly. “You’re sleeping with a human woman. Neglecting your duties and using your powers.”

I hold up a finger at him. “How did you know I was using my powers?”

He looks at me doubtfully. “I’m your familiar, you idiot. Iknow.”

I sigh and look at the walls, rubbing my face. “I’m not stalling; we needed a break.”

“You could have caught him days ago, but you’re getting distracted bythat.”He points to the door. His face falls into a smirk as he looks at me suspiciously. “Oh, I get it,” he remarks slyly. “You’re falling inlovewith her.”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” I say, waving him away.

“I’m going to stop this,” he warns.

“What do you mean?” I ask defensively.

“She will die,” he pauses. “So you can be free.”

SIXTEEN

JENNA

“What the fuck?” I exclaim, shooting up in bed.

I glance at my leg, watching blood seep through the tiny scratch. My hair is pulled back, and I shriek, frantically trying to grasp whatever is attacking me.

“Verrin!” I call out in desperation.
