I writhe around, trying to get the thing to let go of my hair. Verrin runs into the room, and the thing flies toward him, slicing his hand.

“Yeelus, quit,” he commands, rushing to me.

The thing flies back at me and lands on my chest, holding a claw to my throat. My eyes widen, and I look at it in shock before Verrin picks it up, holding it tightly.

“Let me go. The girl …” the thing exclaims, trying to wiggle out of Verrin’s grip.

“It can talk?” I ask, shooting up from the bed.

“Itshouldn’t even be here,” Verrin yells, struggling to pin the thing to the ground.

It hisses and scowls, flapping its wings and flailing its paws in the air.

“Hey!” a voice calls from outside the door. “What’s going on in there?”

“Uh, sorry, sir!” I yell in a high-pitched voice. “My boyfriend and I got a little excited.”

I hear a grunt and look at the creature, finally relaxing on the floor. I point to it and walk toward Verrin.

“You know this thing?” I whisper-yell.

He sighs. “Unfortunately. I …” the thing begins struggling again, and Verrin grunts as he tightens his grip. The thing squeals loudly, and I step back.

“Will you quit?” Verrin asks, his voice dripping with irritation.

The thing sighs and glares at me. I stare at it, contemplating if I’m more furious that it attacked me or that Verrin is in cahoots with it.

“Fine,” the thing said lowly.

“Promise no more of this. Promise you won’t hurt her,” Verrin demands.

The thing looks at Verrin and nods regretfully. Verrin slowly releases his grip, and the creature flips onto all fours, jumping on the bed and scowling at me.

“What is this thing?” I exclaim, throwing a hand in the pest’s direction.

Verrin sighs and rubs the back of his head. “He’s my familiar.”

“Familiar?” I ask.

“Yes, a familiar,” the creature said, flicking its tail. “Athingdesigned to protect its master.”

“Master?” I ask, looking at Verrin.

“Yes, yes,” he said, flustered. “I bought him to keep me safe, and he’s become,” he pauses and looks at the creature, “more of a nuisance than anything.”

The creature chuckles. “I may be a nuisance,” it looks at me, “but at least I’m not a … whore.”

“Awhat?” I shout, stalking toward the creature.

Verrin holds me back. The creature smiles slyly, and I have a burning desire to punch it in its face. Verrin turns to the animal.

“Yeelus, there isnoreason for that.”

“There’snoreason,” the creature stands and walks to the end of the bed, examining its paws, “why you shouldn’t have caught up with the wizard yet.”

I look at Verrin, and he remains silent. “Fine,” he said, motioning for Yeelus and me to follow him. “Let’s go get the wizard, then.”

“Wait,” I whirl around to face Verrin. “That thing isn’t coming with us, is he?”
