Yeelus chuckles. “Oh, yes, I am.”

Verrin nods at Yeelus. “Yes, he is.”

I cross my arms and watch Yeelus hop off the bed and walk toward the door. I shake my head to collect my thoughts. I reel from the shock of the situation and roll my eyes, following them out.

I grimace as we shift back and forth on Tiara, Yeelus perched on her neck in front of Verrin. Yeelus looks at me around Verrin’s arm and smiles evilly. I scoff.

“Knock it off, you two,” Verrin said firmly.

“I’m not the one doing anything,” I exclaim.

“It doesn’t matter who’s doing what … just stopdoing it,”Verrin said.

I roll my eyes and cross my arms as we ride in silence. The cold breeze wisps my hair over my shoulders, and I wrap my hands around my arms. Verrin reaches behind him and wraps my arms around his chest.

Yeelus looks at me again with a snarl, and I smile mockingly. He huffs and turns around in disgust.

The sound of wagon wheels combines with Tiara’s clopping hooves, and I peer over Verrin’s shoulder. A cart rolls ahead of us slowly, and I lean forward and whisper in Verrin’s ear.

“That’s Malaki. See the chests?”

He nods and stops Tiara. We all slid off, and he tied her to a tree. I wonder how we caught him so quickly this time or if we have always been this close. My brow furrows before Verrin whispers in Yeelus’s ear.

Yeelus runs and jumps up on the cart and over the chests before hissing in Malaki’s ear. Verrin and I hear a scream and Malaki’s equu whinnies. Malaki jumped out of the cart and tried to calm his equu, shooing Yeelus away from biting his ankles.

“Get, go on, get,” Malaki screams, kicking at Yeelus. He misses as Yeelus weaves through his legs and nips at them. Malaki turns to face Verrin and me. His mouth opens in shock, and he frowns.

“What is the meaning of this?” he bellows, continuing to kick at Yeelus.

“The statue,” Verrin said, glaring at Malaki as he approaches him. “What magic was laid in it?”

Malaki shoots Verrin a look of shock before shouting as Yeelus bites his ankles.

“Yeelus, enough!” Verrin commands. Yeelus ran over to Verrin and jumped onto his shoulder. Verrin turned back to Malaki.

“The statue you sold her,” Verrin points at me, and Malaki looks behind him to meet my gaze. “What magic was in it?”

“Magic?” Malaki questions, surprised. “There was nomagic.”

Verrin turns to stare at me. I furrow my brow and approach Malaki with my arms crossed.

“You told me it would grant me my heart’s desire,” I claim.

Malaki laughed. “What foolishness. You really believed that?”

I frown. “There was magic. My blood spilled into it, and it filled up, and then …” My voice trails off as I glance at Verrin, debating how much to say.

“And then?” Malaki said convincingly.

“And then,” Verrin begins, grabbing Malaki by the neck. “I ended up here, summoned from the Seven knows what magic, and I need to know how to get back.”

“Back where?” Malaki said, struggling to breathe.

“That’s of no matter to you,” Verrin claims, releasing Malaki from his grip.

Malaki bends over and coughs, regaining his breath. I walk closer and stand beside Verrin, who glances at me slightly.

“I didn’t,” Malaki coughs, “didn’t know there was magic in it,” he said between breaths. “It’s always a good sell, especially for,” he motions to me.
